rynne: (scully the sleeping beauty)
Had my first day of work today. 9:30 to 5:00. I'm also scheduled tomorrow and Sunday for 7-8 hour shifts, then nothing for the rest of the week. Of course weekends are a theater's busiest times, and they told me in the beginning they weren't going to schedule me too many days until I proved I was actually going to show up, but right now I'm wondering if all my shifts are going to be full shifts. I mean, this is only my second paying job, but at Round Table I had 4-5 hour shifts as well as 8 hours. I hope Cinemark also schedules shorter shifts, even if only on weekdays.

Mostly because my feet are killing me. I'm working concessions, which is an easy job so far, while still keeping me busy enough that I didn't get bored. I'm fine with the job, and fine with working for seven or eight hours. I've just never had a job that kept me on my feet all day, so they really hurt.

Anyone have any advice for what to do to minimize the soreness? I'm going to be standing just as long tomorrow and the next day, and I'd like them to be less than a complete misery.

Have finished three of the four papers due on Monday. At least two of them need some editing, and I'm sure the one I'm going to do tomorrow and Sunday will as well, but I can do that.

Tonight I went to campus films with [livejournal.com profile] heart_of_man, and this weekend's was Mamma Mia, which I love. And of course it got me into the mood to listen to ABBA, but I don't actually have that many ABBA songs. So I went to iTunes to buy a few more, but iTunes is being annoying. I try to listen to that thirty-second preview they have of each song, but every few seconds it needs to "rebuffer stream", so the song ends up taking two or three times to load.

Anyone know what's up with this, and what I can do to fix it? I've got the latest version of iTunes, so I know it isn't that.

Also, I am ridiculously tired and am so going to bed soon. *snoozes*

All right, am tired and also betaing, so another quick post today.

For almost three years I've had my website, hosted by someone else and using html that another person created for me. I'm very grateful to both of these people, but my host said that due to real life she doesn't want her name associated with fandom, and I can't argue with that.

So now I've actually got my own site: www.thebackgroundhum.com

Don't bother to check it out yet though, since I haven't switched anything over from my first site. I will do that soonish, but when I'm doing that, I'd also like to change things. I've had that style for three years, and I'd like to change it a bit.

But I don't know more than basic html, and I want to. I want to be able to do this site myself. So I guess I'm asking for recommendations of good websites that teach a bit more complicated html. Something like what I've got right now, but so that I can make my own changes without worrying I'm getting rid of something I really need. :p Also, something intelligible to someone who doesn't understand computer programming that well.

Yesterday I went over to [livejournal.com profile] velesia's and made her watch "Fear Her". Mwah. Probably not the best introductory episode, but the other ones I had were Impossible Planet/Satan Pit, Love and Monsters, and Army of Ghosts/Doomsday. Out of all those, Fear Her is definitely better introductory material. Plus, flirty! She said she thinks the Doctor is cute (looks and personality), though as that's clearly what the episode is about, she got the gist. *g* (Oh, Vel. You should be glad I had this disc, rather than season 3, on hand. He's not very cute, personality-wise, in that season.)

We were also going to make snickerdoodles. Except we started pretty late, and by 11:30 the batter wasn't done chilling, so we decided to hell with actually baking the cookies, we could eat the dough! So we did, and it was good.

I got the DW S2 Confidentials today. There were also David Tennant's Video Diaries, and I squeed through much of that. How sexy does he look with his glasses? And stubble! And just, you know, all the time! And he kept licking his lips. :D He also seems like a real sweetheart, and I totally wouldn't have minded if they'd gone on a lot longer than they had.

How many of the S2 Confidentials are actually worth watching? 'Cause I watched all of the S1 Confidentials, but half of them (or maybe more, I forget) were technical stuff I wasn't really interested in. I want talking about the characters/plots, plzkthnx. Or, on the other hand, lots of David Tennant.

Now, O Wonderful Flist, I need your help. I am trying to watch .avi files on QuickTime, but they won't play! My computer is completely up-to-date, software-wise, so I have no idea what the problem is. It's just, I download something, but when I try to play it, I get nothing but a blank screen. QuickTime keeps telling me there's a component I need to download, but I've downloaded it twice and nothing happens. I have no idea what's going on or how I can fix it. Maybe I shouldn't even be bothering trying to watch .avi files with QuickTime, but in that case, I don't know what else I can use.

Help?

eta: And why can't I find any good icons of the TARDIS? Gah. *frustrated*

So a bunch of people on my flist are going on about how there's new Torchwood tonight, and, especially after looking at a few people's reactions to previous eps in this season, I'm curious. I've got S1 next up in my Netflix queue (though I've heard it's not that good), but I've not seen any of it yet.

So, my questions--first, do you think I'd be all right picking it up tonight, or would it be a lot easier to understand if I watched from the beginning? (Note that I have seen Doctor Who, so I know things about Jack.) And, if starting now is fine, where do I watch it?

...I actually have a lot I want to say, but this is just a quick post before I go back to reading fic. :p

So, this Wednesday, my little sister is leaving for a nine-month trip abroad, to Tanzania, Thailand, and Australia, but she has to leave from San Francisco, which is about four hours away. My parents and I are taking her there, then spending some more time in the city before coming home. But it's been awhile since I've been to San Francisco, so can anyone recommend something fun to do that won't take longer than, say, half a day?

More details on other things, including Sister's trip, later. I just wanted to get this out before Wednesday.

Now that I've started writing fics again, I am reminded that it's been a long time since I last updated my website. In fact, I don't think I have since I got this computer. Then again, I'm not quite sure how to do it on a Mac; on my old PC, I used Notepad for writing plain html documents (without all the extra garbage MS Word throws in), and Windows XP's built-in FTP server to upload things.

But now I don't have Notepad and I don't have an FTP program. Anyone know where I can get free, workable things for a Mac, that someone technologically ignorant could understand?

Does anyone know when Croatoan is going to be released on iTunes? I've got the first eight episodes of Supernatural S2, and I've got Hunted on TiVo, but I do prefer watching episodes in order. But failing my ability to watch Croatoan soon, do I need to have seen it in order to get everything in Hunted? It's just that I've been reading the flist squee about it, and now I really wanna watch it.

In other news, I got my leave of absence, and on Sunday my dad and I are going up to move me out and bring my car back down. And Twin left yesterday to go back to her school. Sigh. Figures that she finishes her leave of absence just as I start mine. I will miss her, but at least I won't have to miss the rest of my family at the same time.

I have my computer working again. Well, I got it working again on Friday; I've just been really lazy about updating LJ.

Completely reinstalled OSX, though--as in, starting over from scratch. I shouldn't have had to do that, really, but there wasn't enough space on my harddrive to reinstall without deleting everything first, and there only wasn't enough space because I was too lazy to delete the damn volleyball video for my younger sister's college apps that my dad made several months ago. It was even in the fucking trash--I just never got around to emptying the trash. *sigh* And the campus tech guys did say that given a few days they'd at least be able to get some stuff off my harddrive, but I just wanted my damn computer working again, and it's not like I had anything on here that I couldn't replace pretty easily.

I never thought I'd be glad about not having written much fanfic lately, but it does mean that I haven't lost much. At least, not fanfic-wise. Which brings me to part of the point of this post.

I've lost everything in my iTunes library. I've actually been pretty good about putting all those songs on my iPod, so I've still got all the music, it's just not on my computer anymore. And I know there are programs that allow you to transfer songs from iPod to iTunes, but the ones I've downloaded either don't work or I can't figure them out, so I was wondering if anyone could recommend a program that would allow me to get my music back.
rynne: (facepalm Mulan)
The batteries in my wireless mouse died and I don't have any on hand. How does one do the equivalent of right-click on a Mac?

(Am at school, btw. Long-ass car trips are boring. Not much else to say.)
rynne: (huh?)
Sky, ground, and sun. There's a connection there, but I can never think of what it's called, and it keeps bugging me. There is a name for that connection, isn't there? It's not quite "elemental", but it has to be something...except I can't bloody think of it! Do any of you know what it's called?

I should be getting KH2 tomorrow. Except that I have so much work to do that I can't, in any conscience, start playing it right away, because I know how I am with new video games, and I'll just completely ignore everything (even the internet) until I beat it. Considering I'm already having problems doing all my work, I shouldn't compound it with a new distraction. Even if I hear all these good things about it that keep getting me excited...

I don't understand how boredom exists. There's too much to do!
