Notes: First of all, enormous thanks go to [livejournal.com profile] ansley15, who whipped this thing into shape and whose advice made me so much happier with it. Thank you to [livejournal.com profile] jactrades for the amazing art, and to [livejournal.com profile] vertrauen for the awesome mix. Thank you as well to [livejournal.com profile] solara1357 for assuring me the story wasn't as bad as I thought it was, and to [livejournal.com profile] ladyblahblah, who listened to me talk about it and helped me with some tricky moments.

This story overlaps with canon in several places. There is dialogue from Generations, dialogue and story from STXI, and quite a bit of the dialogue and story from Star Trek: Countdown, the comic prequel to XI (which makes that movie make a lot more sense, by the way).

I started this story because I've read a few "Kirk survives Generations and reunites with Spock" stories, though depressingly few, and I've read several "Kirk Prime and Spock Prime are reunited in XI-verse," but I was unable to find any that did what I most wanted. Namely, the "Kirk survives Generations" fics tended to end with his reunion with Spock, but what I really wanted to see was his life after that -- how did he adapt to life in the future? And he wasn't that old in Generations, so if he survived that movie, he could conceivably have lived long enough to be there for the events of XI. No one seemed to have written that story, though -- so I did it myself. I hope you all like it.

And finally: There are more stories in this universe, including two shorter chaptered fics already completed following the further adventures of Kirk Prime and Spock Prime in XI-verse. There will also be more about the new crew of the Enterprise when I have time to write them. However, my beta for this story doesn't think she'll have time to do more stories, so I need a beta who's willing to tackle a whole developing universe. Please PM me if you're interested, and I'll give you more details on what I'm looking for. Thanks!

Chapter One | Chapter Two | Chapter Three | Chapter Four | Chapter Five | Chapter Six | Chapter Seven | Chapter Eight | Chapter Nine | Chapter Ten | Chapter Eleven | Chapter Twelve | Epilogue

You must know that I do not love you and that I love you,
because everything alive has its two sides;
a word is one wing of silence,
fire has its cold half.

I love you in order to begin to love you,
to start infinity again
and never to stop loving you:
that's why I do not love you yet.

I love you, and I do not love you, as if I held
keys in my hand: to a future of joy—
a wretched, muddled fate—

My love has two lives, in order to love you:
that's why I love you when I do not love you,
and also why I love you when I do.

Star Trek is kind of screwing with my usual fandom MO.

Of course, there's the long fic, which is unusual. And there's the sequel to the long fic brewing in my brain that I think I'm going to try to start soon.

But I also wanted to write some one-shots this summer. I like one-shots, and they're what I usually write anyway.

But -- and this is where it gets weird for me -- the only fic ideas I seem to have are either chaptered fic or porn. I mean, in all of my other fandoms, I've written a whole lot of gen. Even when I'm focused on one pairing, like I was in Doctor Who, I still had plenty of gen, friendship ideas for the Doctor and Rose.

Somehow in Star Trek, my brain wants either plotty chaptered fic (that's still about a pairing), or pure porn. IDEK. Maybe it's just, with Kirk and Spock, pretty much the only thing I did not see them do on screen was make out and have sex. By the time of the movies they were totally an old married couple and it even felt just like RST to me. And this is such an old fandom, where it's hard to find something that someone hasn't already done, and done twenty or thirty years ago.

I think I'm still going to write some porn, because I have actually written very little porn across my fandom years. But as great as [livejournal.com profile] st_xi_kink_meme is for porn ideas that ping me, it's less so for stories without porn. So at some point I might go looking for prompts.

It's been a long time since I wrote off prompts other people gave me. I should totally do that.

rynne: (dance!)
Also: watching more The Next Generation. Just watched the episode Data's Day.

OMG, Data and Dr. Crusher tap danced! It was a great episode in general, but that made me extremely happy. I want to dance with Data.

Though I do have to wonder why Dr. Crusher started Data off with a time step. I mean, it's not exactly advanced, but it's probably better to start with a flap or a shuffle. Which are both in a time step. XD

Now I really need an icon of Data tap dancing.

I felt the sudden intense need for Return of the King: Extended Edition, so that's playing now. It will last past when I should go to bed, but whatevs.

Nearly fifteen years since I first read the trilogy, and it's still probably my most favorite thing ever. I mean, it's so perfect I feel no need for fanfiction. I have my issues with the movies, but I feel like Peter Jackson managed to capture the spirit of Tolkien, so I forgive him for the things I wish weren't in there. (Like Frodo rejecting Sam. WTF? I mean, I know I'm supposed to be sad there, and I sort of am, but that's mostly drowned out by irritation. XD I also really miss the Scouring of the Shire.)

Also, first time watching this movie since getting into Star Trek. HI KARL URBAN.
