Roy Dotrice has passed away at the age of 94. May he rest in peace.

I wasn’t sure who he was at first, since I’m not interested in Game of Thrones. That is, I didn’t realize who he was until I checked IMDB and saw that he had played Roger Wyndam-Pryce in one episode (Lineage) of Angel. Now I remember him. Looking through the rest of his filmography, I have also seen him in Nightmare Classics: Carmilla (1989), Tales From The Crypt (1972), and two episodes of Faerie Tale Theatre. He was also Zeus in three episodes of Hercules: The Legendary Journeys.

I might need to track down his episode of Tales From The Darkside, wherein he plays "Vampire Count Jeffrey Draco."

Yesterday, I scheduled my grocery delivery for the 8 am - 10 am slot, since I had plans for the afternoon, and so I set my alarm for 7:30 so I could at least have brushed my teeth and put on pants, but I hit snooze instead of getting up, and then the doorbell rang at 7:45. Needless to say, teeth were not brushed and pants were not acquired - I did pull on a pair of boxer shorts before I answered the door, but I was still half-asleep while the guy handed me my groceries.

I guess being early like that almost makes up for two weeks ago, when they didn't show up at all? Even though they said they delivered it to someone in the household? And I spent half an hour on the phone with Amazon assuring them that as the only person who lives in my household, I had not received any groceries. They refunded my money, of course, but it meant I had to actually go do grocery shopping. And then my baby spring greens froze (I think it was the packaging? because the bagged salad doesn't do that) and I had to buy lunch all week anyway, because ugh, salad that has frozen and then defrosted is all limp and slimy and I couldn't bear a week of lunches of it.

In better news, my plans yesterday were meeting up with [personal profile] tenaciousmetoo, her husband, and [personal profile] innie_darling to go see the 30th anniversary screening of The Princess Bride, which was, of course, fantastic. It opened with Ben Mankiewicz interviewing Rob Reiner, and Rob Reiner telling cute stories about the filming of the movie (and then there was a second brief interview segment bookending the movie).

The movie still holds up. It's still sweet and funny and romantic and funny, eminently quotable with iconic performances, sword fights, pirates, evil princes, and true love conquering all. Do I wish Buttercup were a little more active in the fire swamp? I do. But I am heartened by having seen Robin Wright as General Antiope in Wonder Woman, and the progression of yet another princess from my youth (I was 17 when TPB came out, so I can't say childhood) becoming a general. Anyway! It was great to see it on the big screen again, and I definitely recommend it.

Then we had dinner at the Grey Dog - the food was good but the music was loud - and talked for a couple of hours. All in all, a great way to spend a grey October afternoon.

And then the Giants actually won last night! A game where they were supposed to be annihilated! So that was fun. *g* But now I am very sleepy and wish I was home in bed instead of at my desk at work. Sigh.

I answered the first ten questions of this meme here, and now I'm doing the second set of 10:

Ship Questions for your Current Fandom

11. Who is your current OTP?
I guess if my "current" fandom is technically Star Wars, then Han/Leia is my current OTP. *hands* And also Rey/Finn and Obi-Wan/Satine and Kanan/Hera.

12. Who is your current OT3?
Rey/Finn/Poe. Anakin/Padme/Obi-Wan (which is more...how could these relationships be better/more healthy than fervent shipping; but they do work better as a trio. IJS).

13. Any NoTPs?
Didn't I already answer this last time? Reylo for Star Wars, definitely.

14. Go on, who are your BroTPs?
Han and Luke, I guess? Though I'm okay with Luke being there as part of the OT3 with Han and Leia. *hands*

15. Is there an obscure ship which you love?
Obi-Wan/Satine. Obi-Wan/Ventress. Also, Anakin/Ahsoka. I would also love some Ahsoka/Steela if people would write it.

16. Are there any popular ships in your fandom which you dislike?
Hux/Ren. Ugh. DO NOT WANT.

17. Who was your first OTP and are they still your favourite?
HAN/LEIA. OTP OF OTPS.

18. What ship have you written the most about?
I haven't really written much ship fic in Star Wars.

19. Is there a ship which you wished you could get behind, but you just don’t feel them?
Qui-Gon/Obi-Wan. I guess I can see why people ship them but I find them a huge yawn and have mostly been unable to sustain interest in reading fic about them where the romantic relationship is the focus. See also Finn/Poe, which doesn't interest me unless Rey is also present. I also just don't get any of the Obi-Wan/clones fic. I mean, knock yourselves out, but I don't get it.

20. Any ships which you surprised yourself by liking?
Obi-Wan/Anakin. Which - I don't read most of the fic for it, because I don't see it a regular romance? But I have a hard time with them being separated (before Anakin turns evil, I mean) even if they are technically involved with other people.

Another board meeting successfully concluded! Now maybe I can start answering comments again, and maybe do some more writing!

In the meantime, have a househunting update:

Tuesday, I received an updated loan commitment letter - almost final!, they assured me - and asked me to send them two pieces of documentation, one of which I'd sent previously (twice, backup for a deposit which was the payout of the inherited IRA from my dad back in May) and one which was a letter explaining why I was okay paying more than the apartment was appraised for (i.e., the comparables used were six months out of date, and I love the area and the building!), and they were like, okay, you should have a final letter soon!

So I didn't get it yesterday and today was frantic work-wise, but after everything was over, I emailed them and was like, "When do I get the final letter? I need to send this application in!" and they were like, "...that was the version for your application? Have your lawyer look it over and then send it in."

I wish they were more explicit about these things! Because this letter is not executed, nor does it actually specify what my monthly payments will likely be, both of which were done with the letter the last time around. So I was like, "Okay then!" and sent it on to my attorney, who just emailed back like, "Good to go, V!"

Since S. the realtor's assistant has already approved the rest of the package ("You're so organized! You're like my long lost twin!"), I made the required copies (on three-hole-punched paper) and I went and got all the necessary checks; it's costing me $1225 in various application fees this time around(!!!), and luckily I don't have to pay $10 a check for each certified check because I have "priority" status at Big Evol MegaCorp (i.e., my bank and also former employer), because that would have been $50 on top of that. And that's not even getting into the $450 the appraisal cost, or what the closing costs will be (and then the moving costs and cleaning costs and ripping up the carpet and refinishing the floors costs and painting an accent wall costs etc.). Oy.

So tomorrow I'll slip the numbered divider tabs into the pile of papers, put them in the binders, and send the whole thing off via FedEx and hope they call me for an interview soon. Keep your fingers crossed!

Last night, on the spur of the moment, L and I met up for dinner at the bar around the corner, and it turned out it was Bingo Night. I didn't even know bar bingo was a thing, but apparently it is, and so we played, and in addition to getting two free shots when the 'booze ball' came out (a different ball for each round), I won two bingos! Well, the first one I was playing L's card, so technically she won, and she got an adorable pink unicorn bubble gun as a prize. I won the last round, scoring a blackout! And $25 off the tab! It was stupidly fun, though two beers and two shots on a weeknight is not the brightest idea I've ever had.

And now it's time for What I'm Reading Wednesday:

What I've just finished
Star Wars: From a Certain Point of View, which is a short story anthology that retells the story of the original Star Wars (A New Hope, if you must) from the POV of background/secondary characters. Some stories work much better than others, and it spends much too much time with the denizens of the cantina in Mos Eisley (though one of my favorite stories is the one about the lost clarinet or whatever it is called, and the variety of shenangians around it). I also really enjoyed the memo from the admiral that Vader chokes in the conference room, and the report from the stormtrooper with the dewback obsession, both of which are hilarious. There are a few clinkers - the mousedroid one was unreadable for me, and while I liked getting Beru's POV, her story didn't seem to fit at all, and I thought the writing for Biggs's story was way too overwrought.

Otoh, the Yoda section! Oh my heart. spoilers )

What I'm reading now
The Ship of the Dead (Magnus Chase #3). I admit, the way to my heart is definitely to have a Percy cameo at the start of every book. I do like that kid a lot. But this jumps right into the action and so far I'm enjoying it a lot.

What I'm reading next
I've got both The Rules of Magic by Alice Hoffman and All the Crooked Saints by Maggie Stiefvater on the iPad, so probably those, but anything could happen!

I didn't mention this, but I left work early on Friday because there was a power outage and a smoke condition, so they sent us home at about 4 pm. This happened the week prior as well (the day I was out sick) and is due to the work going on in the street in front of the building, which has basically been going on since the crane collapse in February 2016. Between this and the years of construction near my apartment on the Second Avenue Subway, I feel like I am always in a construction zone. I gotta tell you, I don't love it.

Anyway, since the building was evacuated and then closed yesterday for the holiday, the HVAC took forever to get online, so I sat in a 90 minute meeting this morning in a small conference room with 10 other people, a projector that shed heat like a small star, and no AC. The windows had to be closed because of the construction - we're on a low floor so all street noises sound like they are happening in the room with you. As a way to start the day, I can't say I recommend it.

I guess because of the evacuation, the cleaning staff didn't take out the garbage on Friday, so it's still sitting here in the bin under my desk. Sigh.

Ugh. Tuesday.

In better news, [community profile] yuletide assignments are out! And mine is a good one! It's not even the fandom that I forgot to go into my signup on Sunday and delete because I was having doubts, which I was sure it would be (it typically is). My person only listed one prompt and their letter is only about a fandom we didn't match on, but luckily, the prompt they gave for the one we did match on is right up my alley, so this should be fun! Remind me of this in December when I'm tearing my hair out. *g*

In even better news, The Last Jedi trailer dropped last night! (My tumblr tag is, obviously, star wars: the last jedi, so you can see all the beautiful gif sets people made in the immediate aftermath, or so you can blacklist it so you don't have to see any of it. Whatever works for you, you know?)

I did a Rogue One/New Hope rewatch yesterday, and I have to say I still love Bodhi, Baze and Chirrut best. Sigh. Also, the way it recontextualizes that first scene between Leia and Vader is so great.

Anyway. I suppose this is spoilery? Idek, but here's a cut, just in case: The Last Jedi trailer spoilers: quibbles and concerns )

I did like some stuff though! I'm not a total negative Nelly.

The good things:

stuff I liked! )

In conclusion: I have concerns but I AM EXCITE. GIVE IT TO ME. PLEASE DON'T SUCK!

I have been wearing the wrong size my whole life, and I can't help but wonder how I'd have felt if I'd been wearing the right size. More supported, I guess. Oh, well. So I finished s3 of Killjoys last night and gosh that was both supremely satisfying and also makes me desperately want season 4 right now.

spoilers )

Speaking of BSG, and because I'm me, I've been thinking of crossovers I'd like to see, and of course, D'avin & Starbuck would be fun, and not just because the actor reminds me a little of Michael Trucco. And then moving beyond BSG, D'avin and Rex, of course, because good soldiers follow orders and then deal with the psychological trauma after. And Dutch and Ventress and not just for character reasons - it would be an interesting fusion, given the differences in how bounty hunting is handled in each 'verse. And Johnny and Kaylee, of course, and the friendly rivalry between Lucy and Serenity.

I should get an icon. Now that I've said that about both Killjoys and The Good Place, I should probably actually go try to find some now.

Last night, I also dreamt that I went on some kind of reconnaissance mission with Thor and we body-swapped, and then when we swapped back we had fun makeouts. Mmm...Thor. #ride the lightning

Things! And also, stuff:

= I had to put the AC on last night to sleep. That is just so wrong when it's October. SO WRONG.

= The Rangers lost (to the Avs, but Varlamov stood on his head so...), but even after updating the OS, my iPhone still autocorrects to all caps for ZIBANEJAD. As it should. Also, Shattenkirk apparently had, like, 120 friends and family at the game. When I heard that, I was like, "I don't even know 120 people!"

= Has anyone else had a lot of trouble with the AO3 in the past couple of days? I know they were going to https or whatever, but suddenly I constantly have a lost login cookie and when I try to login it tells me I've been logged out because of a lost cookie (and also that a bookmark can't be saved - except I wasn't trying to bookmark anything so idek). But if I already have a story open in a tab, I'm still logged in when I refresh it. And when I try to open links from other sites, it tells me the redirect doesn't work and sends me to a No Redirect page. I turned off https everywhere for the site and it was still happening, and it's just super annoying. This is all in Firefox btw. I still get the redirect issue sometimes in Chrome but not the lost login cookie. It's more intermittent and not always replicable, so I didn't put in a ticket, but wtf is going on?

= Brooklyn Nine Nine: The Big House, Part 2
spoilers )

= The Good Place: Team Cockroach
spoilers )

I really need an icon.

= These Wings Are Made to Fly by [tumblr.com profile] pixiedane is a great tribute to the awesome animated ladies of Star Wars (both TCW and Rebels). ♥♥♥

= It's finally Friday! This week has been about 8 years long. Ugh.

A Problem With Editing The Form

Is anyone else having issues when it comes to editing their Yuletide sign-up? I wanted to add a couple of other fandoms in there, as well as more characters I was willing to write in another. However, when I tell it to save, I end up with an error. “502 Bad Gateway. The server returned an invalid or incomplete response.”

It’s like that in both Internet Explorer and Firefox. The only workaround I’ve come up with at the moment is jotting down everything I already have, and that I wanted to add, deleting the current sign-up, and doing another sign-up form with the corrected content. I just worried I would end up with that error again.

Speaking of Yuletide, [personal profile] damzel had the idea of gathering together a list of the gothic horror/gothic romance fandoms that were nominated this year. That’s currently unofficially underway at [community profile] hidden_passages. If there are any that were missed, (I’m certain there must be) feel free to add them there.

I was sad to hear about Tom Petty's death. I've been a fan of his music for most of my life, and reading tributes to him just reminded me of how many songs of his I love*. And how long a career he had.

*I can't decide if "The Waiting" is my all time favorite, or "American Girl" or "Free Falling" or "Learning to Fly" or "Even the Losers" or "Refugee" or "Into the Great Wide Open" or...you get the picture.

Last week, I missed reading Wednesday due to being confused as to what day of the week it was since I was not feeling well. *snerk* Let's catch up!

What I've just finished
The Ruin of Angels by Max Gladstone, which I found kind of draggy at the start, or maybe it's just my impatience with people not telling people stuff as a plot point - I mean, maybe if Ley had been a previously established character, I wouldn't have been so annoyed with her "Just trust me even though I'm not going to tell you anything!" schtick, but as it was, I was very annoyed. Otoh, once Izza showed up and Tara got more involved, things started moving along nicely, so I ended up enjoying the second half much more. But ugh, "I can't tell you because ~danger" is so annoying! I wish people would stop writing it. I would guess that 98% of the time, it's MORE dangerous not to tell! Anyway. that's just a personal pet peeve.

Miles Morales by Jason Reynolds, which is very good at what it's trying to do, but was not what I personally want most out of a novel about Spider-Man, which is, you know, web-slinging and wall-crawling and street level crime-fighting with quips. This was definitely more about Miles and race and class and systemic oppression, and well-done for a YA audience. Though Ganke needs to tone it down a notch. I don't remember him being that annoying in the comics.

Castle Hangnail by Ursula Vernon, which is the story of 12 year old Wicked Witch Molly trying to take possession of the titular castle - and the minions who inhabit it - by performing a series of required tasks. I found this utterly charming and think it would be a great prelude to the Tiffany Aching books for any 8 or 9 year olds in your vicinity. In fact, I kind of want Tiffany and Molly to meet. *g*

What I'm reading now
Star Wars: From a Certain Point of View, which is a short story anthology featuring scenes from the Original Trilogy (and possibly elsewhere? I've only read the first story, so I can't say) from the POV of background/secondary characters. The quotes I've seen from it promise some primo Ben Kenobi heartbreak, so I'm looking forward to that, as well as stories from a variety of characters we don't get to hear from in the films (e.g., the first story is about the escape/boarding of the Tantive IV from Captain Raymus Antilles' POV).

What I'm reading next
I also have the new Magnus Chase book, so that's up next, and then next week, Alice Hoffman's Practical Magic prequel comes out, so that.

It's always so exciting when I have an answer to this question! *g*

Dear yuletide writer:

First of all, I want to say a big thank you for agreeing to write a story for me. I love all the fandoms I've chosen, so I will be happy with a story for any request. If you've already got a story in mind, then go for it! These are all just possible jumping off points if, like me, you like having prompts as a starting point.

Apologies in advance for the length of this letter. I just figured I'd throw it all out there and hope something sticks.

Since it's entirely possible we don't know each other, I figured I'd give you some basics about me and some tips on the kinds of things I like/dislike in stories.

Where to find me: I am [personal profile] musesfool on DW, victoria_p/[archiveofourown.org profile] musesfool on AO3, and [tumblr.com profile] cacchieressa on tumblr, plus I have a recs journal at [personal profile] unfitforsociety. Previous years' yuletide letters can be found at my yuletide letter tag.

Dislikes )

To sum up, mostly what I want is for the characters to have fun hanging out with each other, because I love hanging out with them. If it can be described by the phrase "hijinks ensue," you're probably nailing it.

In all cases, if you have an idea that uses all the characters I've requested, that's awesome, but if you don't/can't, that's okay, too. Certainly my suggestions include ideas that may not use all the requested characters, so don't feel like you need to shoehorn someone in if it doesn't work with what you're writing.

2017
Unlike last year, where I had a strong theme running through all my requests, this year, it's a free for all. Ahem. I mean, I'm most interested in stories where the characters are enjoying themselves with each other. When I say I love hijinks and shenanigans, I mean that whole-heartedly and unironically.

Specifics
In terms of specifics, I tried to expand a little in this letter about what I like about the source (actual request details are in italics, addenda in plain text). I hope you find it helpful.

Note: these are in alpha order by fandom; I really do want all of them, so don't worry about which one you match on - I will be happy with any of them!
