My parents are the most awesome parents in THE ENTIRE WORLD.

Not only did they pay for my entire undergraduate education, at an expensive private school, they are going to pay for TWO THIRDS of my law school. My dad and I spent some time tonight going over my loan requirements for next year, and he said that they can pay about $50,000 EACH YEAR. I will only have loans of roughly $20,000 a year (why is law school $70,000 a year why why why), and they will be the loans with the lowest interest rates and the subsidies and the forgiving repayment plans.

I can graduate from law school only $60,000 in debt. Hah. Only, I say. Except that compared to being $200,000+ in debt, that is an awesome number. And Georgetown has a great loan repayment assistance program for people wanting to go into public interest work, so I think $60,000...will be something I can handle.

My parents are just...so incredibly full of awesome and also foresight. They set up college funds for us before we were born, and have always lived below their means so they have money for things like putting their daughter through law school and letting us go study in Europe and Africa. (Twin is now an intern at CERN in Switzerland, and Younger Sister is going to study in Africa next year.)

And also, in a slight Big Bang update...37,000 words. This story is so awesome! In this chapter it took me off on a tangent I didn't expect but ended up loving. I am so happy with this fic. :D

i. Post #1,500! Um, that's a lot. Less so considering it's over almost eight years, but still. A lot of posts.

ii. Happy Mother's Day to all the moms on my flist! My parents and I went to visit my grandparents, and then Younger Sis called and Twin skypped from Switzerland, so that was nice.

iii. Remix reveals are up! Finally I can claim my fics. I wrote:

Like a Rolling Stone (The Metamorphic Remix) for [livejournal.com profile] framlingem. Star Trek Reboot, Gaila gen with Sarek and Amanda. This was my assignment.

A Bad Habit (The Master Never Learns Remix) for Hokuto. Doctor Who (1963), various incarnations of the Master and the Doctor, plus a few companions. Pretty much gen but you're welcome to see Doctor/Master subtext, because that was not entirely unintended. :p This was my pinch hit.

Justification (The Psychoanalysis Was So Twentieth Century Remix) for Ineffabilitea. Star Trek Reboot, Kirk/Spock, R-ish. I wrote this for Remix Madness.

I've already put them up on my website. I don't have time right now, but I'll be putting them up here over the next few days.

iv. I have definitely decided to do [livejournal.com profile] startrekbigbang this year. I've even started it! I've got the first chapter done, and it's already a quarter of the minimum limit for Big Bang, so I'm definitely not going to have any trouble meeting the word count. I imagine it's probably going to hit at least 40,000, maybe 50,000 words.

And I love my idea. This is going to be so awesome. :D
rynne: (dork!)
Yesterday I finally heard from Columbia, formerly the holdout among my schools. I got a no, which I wasn't surprised about--I was only surprised that it took them so long. But considering I applied back in October, I guess it's something that they took this long to tell me no.

But this means I can finally make my decision! Or rather, confirm the decision I'd pretty much already made. Therefore...

Georgetown Law class of 2014! Three years in Washington DC!

Also, a couple things that amused me in a really geeky way:

1. My mom asked me to put Tangled in my Netflix queue because she hadn't seen it in theaters. I did, and enjoyed it enough that I'd already had it in my queue. Yesterday it came, and we watched it last night, and my mom had plenty to say about Disney Princesses -- and also story archetypes, with reference to Carl Jung.

Yes, academic-style analysis of random movies does run in the family. XD

(My mom also enjoyed Tangled a lot more than she was expecting to. I feel sort of vindicated, because while I don't think the movie is flawless, it's definitely one of my favorite Disney princess movies.)

2. At work today my coworkers kept bursting into laughter. Finally someone came to show me what it was they were laughing about -- an email from a government agency...with absolutely horrible grammar. I also burst out laughing.

I love my job. I may not be getting paid, but at least I'm working with kindred spirits. XD

Pi day! For dinner I roasted pork with apples and my mom said that it was like pork with apple pie. Except that was a coincidence. :p

Though on that note, I've started actually seriously learning to cook. And I'm enjoying it so far, which is nice. I've mostly been getting recipes by googling things, but do you guys have any favorite recipes? I'm not a big fan of Mexican or beans but otherwise I'll probably eat anything. I'm particularly trying to find good vegetarian main dishes.

I'm leaving for Tapachula, Mexico on Wednesday. It's sort of strange, because I'm going with my grandparents and their church group, and it's actually a mission, but I'm not religious. I don't even remember the last time I went to church, but, well, I guess I'll be going to church there. That should be interesting. Mostly I just said yes when my grandparents asked because I get to go to Mexico and actually do something useful there, not just be a tourist. We'll be building a church, but we'll also be building some clinics, so I'm trying to work around my discomfort about missionary work.

Though of course, I'm not bringing my computer. That is going to be...strange. A week and a half completely without internet access. When was the last time that happened? XD It's just as well that I'm not likely to have time to go on the computer anyway.

And finally, I've finished my Star Trek TOS-era movie essay. Or at least, as finished as anything is until it's posted, because I've already added almost a thousand words since sending it to the person who volunteered to beta it. I'm not even sure I should call it an essay, because it's practically a thesis -- it's certainly long enough. Current word count is, um, almost 24,000. Which makes it the second longest complete thing I've ever written. Yeah, I'm pretty crazy. In most fandoms I don't even write fic approaching that length.

So...that'll be posted sometime after I come back from Mexico. In the meantime, I will probably revise it like crazy. :p

Merry Christmas to everyone who celebrates! Well, Christmas Eve. :D

It's a family tradition for us to open gifts on Christmas Eve (Christmas morning is for breakfast and stockings), so I've already got most of my haul and I'm very pleased with it and the reactions to my gifts. I also opened the bottle of wine [livejournal.com profile] velesia gave me for Christmas and we drank that, which was nice.

This year my parents have finally given up on writing "from Santa" on our gifts (now that we're all in our twenties), but what they decided to do instead was give us gifts from famous people. I got gifts from JK Rowling and Alice Cooper, Twin got gifts from famous scientists, and Younger Sis from Lady Gaga and Paris Hilton. I am amused and somewhat incredulous at my parents' choice of people (Paris Hilton, seriously?), but it's better than Santa.

Now I just have to hope my recipient likes my [livejournal.com profile] yuletide fic. I only did one this year, my assignment, but I am fairly pleased with how my fic turned out, and I hope she will be too.
rynne: (four chillin')
Today's my sixth LJ-versary. I've had this thing for six full years now, and tomorrow begins year seven. Damn, that's a long time. This is definitely the most consistent journal I've ever kept, even if in recent years I haven't posted as often as I did in the beginning.

Not much has been going on with me. Yesterday I watched the Fourth Doctor serial The Deadly Assassin, of "Four in Time Lord robes" fame. Which made me sporfle, because ahahahaha Time Lord robes are utterly ridiculous, and Four just makes them funnier since it's, well, Four. It's also basically the only serial in the series without a companion, which was interesting but also sad.

I've also started learning Old English (or at least, how to pronounce Old English phonemes), and it's crazy. By the end of this unit we're supposed to be able to speak and write some simple sentences, but it has such odd pronunciation and spelling. I think it's awesomely cool to learn actual Old English, but just from what I've seen so far, it's also going to be really hard.

I have to go to California for a wedding this weekend, so I'm flying down on Saturday and back on Sunday. I'm looking forward to the wedding itself, since I'm very fond of the cousin getting married, and it'll be the first time I've seen my twin since early January, but I hate flying. *sigh*

I also have more paperwork to finish up for study abroad. I'm going to try and get that done this week, though I still have a few weeks until it's due. I am definitely not going to let my laziness get in the way of me going to London.
rynne: (rain on me)
Today was Younger Sister's last day with me--just dropped her off at the airport. We went to Seattle, and it was quite fun. Walked around the Waterfront and Pike's Place Market, then rode the Monorail to Seattle Center, where we went to the Experience Music Project and Science Fiction Museum.

I did like both of those, but the Science Fiction Museum disappointed me. There was ONE reference to Doctor Who, on a timeline--a small picture of Four surrounded by Daleks in the '70s section. That was IT for Doctor Who. There was plenty of Star Trek and Star Wars and Ursula Le Guin and other books and movies, and there was even some anime so it wasn't confined completely to American stuff (just mostly), but I was disappointed. DW is quintessential sci-fi, and shows exactly how the genre has evolved over the past forty-five years. Surely that's important enough for a better display in the museum?

*sigh* Apparently not. Bloody American ethnocentrism.

We had dinner at The Cheesecake Factory. And I took dessert home, so now I have cheesecake. Complete win. :D

But also, I was supposed to get three discs of Bones today from Netflix. Except when I checked my mailbox after I got home, there was no Bones! I was very sad. Now I'm going to have to eat my cheesecake and mourn not getting more Bones until tomorrow. :(
rynne: (scully the sleeping beauty)
Am back at school. Also, Younger Sis is here! She came back with me, and she's staying until Tuesday night.

I adore Younger Sis, since she's fun and social and likes spending time with me. But she's also not quite as good at entertaining herself as Twin is, and of course as I am, so I don't expect to be online all that often over the next few days.

Tomorrow we're going to the Tacoma Art and Glass museums. On Tuesday, we're going to Seattle. We haven't decided what we're doing Monday yet, though we've pretty much decided against going to Canada. We'd not really do anything there, except, well, be in Canada. I'd like that, except Younger Sis isn't sure it's worth six hours in a car. :p

Okay, am so tired. Younger Sis also wanted to drink, so I've been drinking a bit. Am not drunk, or even tipsy I think, but am so tired. Will possibly be going to bed soon, but will be online and read fic more beforehand.
rynne: (the sun'll come out)
I am actually in fairly good mood right now, which is very nice after the last several days. Possibly having four different prescription meds has something to do with that, though. XD (I am somewhat surprised that an ear infection requires all those meds. Two antibiotics and two analgesics, with one of each being topical and the others general...seems a bit excessive. But it also seems to be working, so I'm not complaining.)

But yes. My ear is not currently killing me, though I'm not sure I'll be up to trying to sleep on it, which means I will probably have another uncomfortable night. There are only three more days left before spring break, though I have a lot to do before then, sigh. Research, and applications for summer internships, and laundry...

And I'm not going to have any time on Friday to deal with it, since immediately after my last class I'll be getting in a car and heading for Spokane for my Young Democrats convention. That'll be Friday to Sunday, and then on Sunday I'm going home to Reno for the rest of the week, and am really looking forward to seeing my friends there again. (They're really most of the reason I'm going home for spring break; otherwise I'd probably be lazy and stay here.)

And the week after, my younger sister is coming to visit me! This is so awesome--I really rather adore my younger sis. :) So she'll be here, and I can show her around Seattle and Tacoma, and that'll be fun.

I think I'll be going to bed soon, and that trying to fall asleep will be uncomfortable, but for now, I'm in a good mood. :D
rynne: (procrastinate!)
Today I was going to get started on a five-to-ten page paper that I've got due on Monday. That didn't happen.

I was also going to get started on this S2 Ten/Rose fic where I play with the alien aphrodisiac cliche and perhaps do something slightly different with it, but that didn't happen either.

Also, today was my younger sister's birthday. She's twenty now, which means all three of us are out of our teens. I wonder how my parents feel about that? XD So I was going to call her today, and that did happen!

One out of three. Well...it could be worse.
rynne: (love life)
The hotel has free internet, so I am here! I don't think I should trying getting the new Doctor Who Christmas special, so that will still have to wait until I get back home, but I did manage to read and comment on my [livejournal.com profile] yuletide present.

Which was Think When the Bells do Chime, and omg it's Garth Nix's Abhorsen series and Nick/Lirael and adventure with the Dead! It was sweet and lovely and ADVENTURE WITH THE DEAD! :D ♥

For more tangible presents, I got DW S4 yay. Also a new iPod and a new phone, both of which I needed because my old ones were starting to not work so well anymore. :p Also, when my mom saw me reading Dorothy Sayers a few months ago, she said she was going to get me a book by someone who wrote similar books to Sayers, so she did, and I read it, and now I have a new author to devour. :D

I also had an absolutely lovely Christmas. Christmas Eve was spent with the extended family (second and third cousins), but today was just the cousins--my mom's brother and sister and their kids. I love my cousins. My oldest cousin works in a Napa Valley winery and my only male cousin is becoming something of a beer connoisieur so there was some very good beer and wine there too. :p

Tomorrow I'm going to the grandparents', and then the day after I'm coming home and I'm going to watch the DW Christmas special, and I think my friends and I are going to take Twin out. Then on the 30th friends and I are going down to Las Vegas, and we're going to spend New Year's in Vegas, and that will probably be...epic. XD

(Except then they want us to camp in Zion National Park for a night. In the beginning of January. CAMPING. IN JANUARY. WHEN IT'S ALREADY SNOWED IN VEGAS. Please tell me I am not the only one who thinks this is a bit crazy? *sigh* I will go, but I've never been much of a camping person. I hope it's still fun.)

Okay, my signal has been going in and out, so I'm going to get going.

Merry Christmas to everyone who celebrates, and happy holidays to all!
rynne: (ten smiles)
I am feeling rather ridiculously stir-crazy right now, which makes no sense because this past week I've been very busy and active. My parents were up this weekend, and on Saturday we went to a place north of Seattle to go wine-tasting, as well as a tour of a brewery. So I ended up drinking...quite a bit of alcohol on Saturday. XD They also bought me two bottles of wine (raspberry fruit wine, which was really good when I tasted it), but I haven't had any yet. I need to find out how I should store open wine bottles. I assume I'll need to refrigerate them, but I need to find out how long they last. I really know practically nothing about wine. :p

I also habitually carry a book around in my purse, and we'd had about an hour free between wine-tasting and going to dinner, so we just went back to my parents' hotel and read a bit, since all of us are readers. I brought a Dorothy Sayers book, and when my mom saw what I was reading, she went into RAPTURES. XD Quite a bit of excited babbling about Dorothy Sayers and how great she was and other similar authors I might like and now she knows what to get me for Christmas.

Yesterday I had a few hours of dance rehearsal and then [livejournal.com profile] heart_of_man and I had pizza and watched Boomtown through The Christmas Invasion. Watching David Tennant in TCI and the Children in Need special...he looks so much younger than in S4, and I think that has to be the Doctor because I don't think three years really make that much of a difference ordinarily. Though I should probably look at shots of him circa the CiN special and him now just to be sure. (Such a hardship! XD)

It really made me wibble, seeing Ten all bouncy and happy and adorable with Rose and knowing that RTD will soon begin his mission to CRUSH THE DOCTOR'S SOUL. I want there to be more happy, dammit! XD

So that was yesterday, and today I had class and then work. I am also really quite tired, so it makes no sense that I also want to out and do something. Gah!

Maybe I will get around to answering comments soon, if I can sit still long enough. Why am I so bad about doing that? XD
rynne: (three and UNIT)
Tomorrow is my mom's birthday. We're going out to see Mamma Mia, and probably out to dinner. I got her this really cool copper and iron rose I bought at the Tahoe Renaissance Faire several weeks ago. I would have got one for myself, but they were a bit too expensive for me to get more than one. *sigh*

I haven't written that much of my post-JE fics yet. I think I know why I'm so bad at writing long fics--I keep wanting to skip to the good bits and ignore the transitions. :p

Watching Timelash right now, which is apparently a sequel to an untelevised Three and Jo serial. Peri was shown a picture of Jo and correctly identified her. I've noticed that Classic Doctors don't seem as reticent on the subject of previous companions as he's been made out to be in the new series, and this is more proof.

I've sort of been assuming that Peri was like Ian and Barbara--the Doctor constantly unable to get her home. I mean, looking at an episode guide, I've seen most of the Peri serials (though not, unfortunately, her introduction), and she doesn't come across as enjoying the traveling. But in this serial, he offered to take her home, and she refused. I'm not sure what's holding them together. I mean, they clearly care about each other, but they don't often seem to really like each other. She's usually complaining about where he's taken her and he gets exasperated, blunt, and shouty. I actually like both of them individually, but I don't understand their relationship.

This is my last Six serial, but I've also got a few Seven from Netflix right now. Seven and Ace, at that--apparently Netflix has no Mel serials. I'm curious about Mel, but I'll be glad to finally see some Ace.

One last thing about this serial (er, for now, since I'm not done), but H. G. Wells is being adorable. *g*
rynne: (bad wolf)
My younger sister is home! It was lateish at night, so I wasn't sure my parents would be awake, but they were. Our dog started barking when we walked in, and my mom was like, "Oh, be quiet, it's just Beth--" and then "BETH!" She had this look of complete shock on her face--it was great. *g* Ever since, she's been gushing about what a nice surprise, she can't believe Beth is home now, etc. Wonderful family reunion, though too bad Twin isn't here.

Also, have been seeing this around:

When you see this, quote something from Doctor Who.

ROSE: I am the Bad Wolf. I create myself. I take the words...I scatter them in time and space. A message to lead myself here.
DOCTOR: Rose, you've got to stop this. You've got to stop this now. You've got the entire Vortex running through your head. You're gonna burn.
ROSE: I want you safe. My Doctor. Protected from the False God.

I love that exchange so much. SO MUCH.
rynne: (exuberance is beauty)
I am getting so excited for things that are happening soon. Tomorrow, of course, there's new Doctor Who, and omg I have been anticipating this episode for months. It will, of course, totally joss the fic I've been working on, but eh, I have no problems with that. And then two weeks after that we'll have the finale, which I am both anticipating and dreading. :p

But there is something happening on Monday that is actually making me just as excited! My younger sister, who graduated from high school last year, has been traveling around the world since November. She did a couple volunteer programs, and has spent months in Tanzania, Thailand, and lately Australia. She was going to stay in Australia until August, but last week she called me and said she'd decided to come home on Monday instead. She also asked me not to tell our parents, so when I pick her up and bring her home, it'll be a complete surprise to them. It's just...wow, I've been looking forward to this. :D

And something I find sorta funny is that I am rather enjoying my summer school class. I mean, I wouldn't have taken it if I hadn't thought it would be interesting, but it's still Statistical Methods, and I'm not really a math person. I like Stats better than other branches of math--in high school, after finishing up the algebra courses my sophomore year, when most people were going into Trig, then Calculus, I went into Probability/Statistic, then AP Stats. I did well enough on the AP test and in the class, but that was a few years ago and I forgot a lot of stuff. Now this class is reminding me--and because I have actually learned it before, I'm doing very well. Plus, I find it even more interesting now than I did in high school. I'm even fine with sitting in class for two hours a day four days a week. :p

Enjoying my recent classes as much as I have makes me really anticipate going back to UPS in the fall. I do love being home and all, but I'm definitely looking forward to going back to school.
rynne: (guitar talk)
About me meme, seen a couple places on the flist. Considering there's now a bunch of new people after I joined Who fandom, I thought it a good idea.

You know how sometimes people on your friend's list post about stuff going on in their life, and all of a sudden you think "Wait a minute? Since when are they working THERE? Since when are they dating HIM/HER? since when???" And then you wonder how you could have missed all that seemingly pretty standard information, but somehow you feel too ashamed to ask for clarification because it seems like info you *should* already know? It happens to all of us sometimes.

Please copy mine below, erase my answers putting yours in their place then post it in your journal! Please elaborate on the questions that would benefit from elaboration! One-Word-Answers seldom help anyone out.

rynne: (bookstack)
So Twin is gone, on her way to her summer internship. She'll be back in August, but then it'll only be a couple weeks before school starts. Little Sister, who is currently in Australia, will also be home in August. I saw her a few months ago when we went to Thailand, but it'll be nice to have her home for a bit (before all three of us leave for college :p).

And speaking of college, I finally got my housing sorted for next year. I've been trying to get things set up for weeks, but it was only this morning that I was able to get a hold of the person everyone was telling me I needed to talk to. So now I have a dorm and a roommate, which will be a bit odd, but hopefully I can make friends with her.

Last night my two best friends and I got together, and we rented The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai in the Eighth Dimension, which one of my friends and the video store clerk both raved about. It was made in 1984, and was...rather cracky. I think RTD would like it. XD But one of the characters was named Reno Nevada, which cracked all three of us up. Though I guess it wouldn't have been so funny if we didn't live in Reno, Nevada. :p

Finally, a meme I snagged from [livejournal.com profile] goldy_dollar.

Happy Mother's Day, to all the mothers on my flist. :) Hope you had a lovely day.

Twin is home! She's leaving at the end of the month for an internship in Oklahoma, and when that's done there's not long before school starts again so she won't be coming back for more than a week or so, so she won't be home for very long. :( But still, Twin is home! My little sister's also gone, and I miss her too, and I miss my parents when I'm away at college, but Twin is different. She's...my twin. I'm sad that we won't have very long together, but I guess that's just part of growing up and making our own lives.

The apostrophe/qutotation marks key on my keyboard sort of fell off today. I have been able to stick it back on, but I'm not sure how long it'll stay there. Eek. This computer is only two years old--it's way too early for it to start falling apart like this. Oh, and now it fell off again. Gah.

Random Doctor Who fic thing, spoilers for The Doctor's Daughter )
rynne: (college)
Had a busy evening last night. I actually managed to write my paper. I started it at midnight, it took me an hour and a half, and I wanted to go to sleep the entire time, but I managed to make myself do it. It's not the best paper I've ever written, but at least it's complete, so whoo!

Also, my younger sister called, and parents and I spent an hour on the phone talking to her. She's teaching English in Thailand right now, and it's still sorta boggling my mind that she's half a world away, but in a few weeks, we're going to be visiting her, and I totally can't wait.

I've been watching season one of Torchwood, and I'm not sure what I think. Well, other than that Gwen really reminds me of Rose, and that Welsh accent can be really thick sometimes. :p
rynne: (exuberance is beauty)
Twin got season one of the new Doctor Who for Christmas, so we're watching that now. I really, really like the Doctor. :D The show is sorta weird, but the Doctor is really cool. And I'm...really seeing the Doctor/Rose. :p

My family opens presents on Christmas Eve, so.

My haul:
Nintendo DS & Zelda: Phantom Hourglass
PotC 3
West Wing seasons 6&7
Very pretty dragon ornaments
Crochet stuff
Bath & Body Works gift card
A sweater
A necklace
A kit for my car

[livejournal.com profile] yuletide opens soon--I'm so excited! I wrote three stories, one my assignment, and the other two for Yuletide Madness. I really hope the recipients like them.

Merry Christmas, all, whether you celebrate or not. :)
