My internet came back! By itself! I was hoping it would, but not expecting it because normally my computer doesn't like me enough for that, but then the internet came back without me needing to take it to the tech people!

I am still sick, and now on my period as well, bugger that, but I have my internet back.

And I started randomly following links today and a BRILLIANT NEW FIC AUTHOR. Well, new to me. I think I didn't realize she existed before because she's at ff.net, but she's got quite a lot of fic, some of them LONG (depressingly rare in DW fandom), and I've only just started devouring her. But the very first fic of hers I read was just as romantic as I like, which is actually extremely hard to do because I tend to like 'em so sweet they could rot my teeth.

I...don't think I'm being very coherent. XD But...awesome new author!

*excited flailing*

I don't care about being sick, and I don't care about being crampy.

*still flailing*

I just read the most awesomely brilliant fic. And I found it via [livejournal.com profile] fanficrants, of all things.

Dumbledore's Army and the Year of Darkness by [livejournal.com profile] thanfiction is Deathly Hallows from Neville's point of view. It's very long, but totally amazing. Definitely a must-read for Neville fans, or anyone who is even somewhat fond of him.

It also apparently has more in that universe, which I am going to start on now, but dude, people need to read this fic.

I'm pretty sure there's been more happening this week, but I can't really think of anything. XD This weekend, though, I hope to finally write some fic again. Let's see how that goes! :p
rynne: (cold Eowyn)
I'm feeling a bit annoyed right now, at myself and at the world. Today I started playing Final Fantasy III for my Nintendo DS, except my DS ran out of battery power. And I must have obviously left the power cord for it at home, because I forgot it needed one. All my other gameboys use regular batteries! XD So I left the cord at home, and I can't really call and ask my parents to ship it because I have no idea where it might be, and I probably have enough cords in my room that they'd grab the wrong one. So I ordered a new cord off the internet, but it's going to take a few days to get here, and in the meantime I can't play my brand new game. *sigh*

Also, I feel a bit urgh with fic. I want to read fic, but it feels like I've already read everything a million times, and I don't feel like wading through a bunch of crap on archives to find something new and good. And preferably long. I love DW dearly, but it has so few really long (as in, over 100,000 words) fics, and those are my favorite kind. So I've been sort of rereading some old HP favorites, but they also fall into the "read a million times" category.

I've been so desperate for things I haven't read/done before that I even DID MY HOMEWORK today. Two papers that I started, and finished, more than a day before they're due! Truly desperate measures. XD

So, anyone want to give me some recs? Preferably long fic, plotty with romance being my favorite, though I will read shorter fics, as long as they're not ones I've already read a bunch. Fandoms I'll read are: Doctor Who, Harry Potter, Star Wars, X-Files, West Wing, Legend of Zelda, various Final Fantasies, Kingdom Hearts, and...probably a few other things. XD Anyone giving me recs will be much loved.

I also have a bunch of comments to answer, but I'm not really in the mood right now. I'll probably get to them tomorrow.

New Doctor Who today!

In other news, [livejournal.com profile] remixredux08 is open!

I got two fics! Two! Both of them were posted before the deadline, so I'm not sure how that happened, but I'm totally not complaining because both were OMGSOBRILLIANT. Eeee! Fics like that are exactly the reason I keep signing up for this ficathon. I'm so happy with them. :D

The Repercussions of Having Bad Hygiene (Go Further Than You Think Remix). Harry Potter, Snape and others. The original story was something I wrote back in 2003, so years ago, and totally not one of my best stories, but this remix ended up so great. It went so much more in depth than my fic, and everything means so much more, and it's totally amazing. Just...wonderful. :D

Om Mani Padmé Hum (The No Loss of Will Remix). Star Wars, with Padme, Obi-Wan, Luke, and Leia. It's a remix of part iv of my "Five Things That Never Happened to Luke Skywalker", and it's SO BRILLIANT. I am in love with it. It also goes more in depth, and means so much, and...*flails* Just read it. It's perfect.

I am also pretty sure I know who wrote the Star Wars fic. *g* I can't wait for the reveal, to see if I'm right.

I love this ficathon SO MUCH. Now I'm off to read more! :D

ETA: This is post 1,111! Hah! *is amused*

I always love a good crossover, but it's rare that I find a really good crossover. And I just finished one that's...really damn good. Good enough that I just have to make a post reccing it.

Browncoat, Green Eyes by nonjon is really one of the best crossovers I've ever read. Dunno if the title gives it away, but it's Harry Potter/Firefly, taking place two years post-Serenity, and written post-OotP. Ships include Simon/Kaylee, past Harry/Luna, and UST with Harry/River and Mal/Inara, and as a warning, Harry is pretty powerful--I know some people don't like that. The story's also almost 300,000 words, so it's pretty epic, and it's posted on ff.net, so I don't know how many people might have read it, since I know a lot of people avoid that site. It's also complete, so no worries about WIPs.

I've read some HP/Firefly crossovers before, but I've never seen one that fits these two universes together so well. What, exactly, fits them together is part of the plot, so I won't give it away, but really, it's just...wow. Awesome. Characterization is great, with lines I thought were rather Whedonesque, and though Harry is different from canon, he's got reason, and it makes sense within the story. There's several original characters, and they're really, really well done. And the plot is just...eeee! Awesome, awesome plot. It's funny, and poignant, and everything I look for in an epic. Just...really. Wonderful, and definitely worth a read for fans of Harry Potter, Firefly, and long stories.
rynne: (let's go fly a kite)
Okay, I'm too impatient to wait until I've seen the entire show before I read fanfic for it. (Not gonna write any without having seen the whole show, but reading...)

Anyone have any Firefly recs? Any character, any ship, any rating, I don't much care. Long fics will be especially loved.

Also, anyone know of good Firefly icon posts?

remix recs

rynne: (meditation)
Here's a few recs, from the fics that I managed to read yesterday from [livejournal.com profile] remixredux. There will probably be a few more recs posts coming later, once I've read more of the fics.

Harry Potter

Apparition #12 (The Scientific Method Remix)
Hermione in OotP, observing Remus and Sirius and beginning to put the facts together. Lovely.

The Evidence of Things Not Seen (The Substance of Things Hoped For Remix)
Lily and faith and wanting to christen Harry. Considering I'm a complete atheist and religious skeptic, I wasn't sure I'd like this, but I really have to commend the author for making me suspend my skepticism for at least the length of the fic, purely on the power of Lily's belief.

Comfort (The Extremely Basic Remix)
James grieving, and Lily opening up to him. Lovely James/Lily.

Dancing Shoes (A Music Box You Couldn't Fix Remix)
Neville. Neville. A beautiful story that anyone who even remotely likes Neville should read.

Star Wars

Blind Faith (The 'In Good Faith' Remix)
Anakin growing into being Obi-Wan's apprentice, and trying and failing to think of what would turn him to the Dark Side. Other younglings are thinking of the same thing, and one of them voices the idea of someone storming the Temple, and Anakin.

Anakin wondered how anyone could forgive someone who had killed everyone in the Jedi Temple. Such an act would be unforgivable in his opinion, but he knew better than to ever voice it.

Those lines KILLED ME DEAD. The irony made me wibble and want to both hug Anakin-now and punch Anakin-RotS.

Lord of the Rings

A Brandybuck's Bravery (Merry's Simple Courage Remix)
This is utterly adorable. The story of Merry and Eowyn on the Pelennor fields as a bedtime story told to a young Took years after RotK. Awww.

Nothing Remains Unseen - The Road to Rivendell Remix
Pippin and Merry on the road to Rivendell. Lovely vignette.

Narnia

Always Spring and Never Summer (Once a King, Always, Immortal Remix)
My remix. MINE. That one that was written for me, and it's SO GORGEOUS. A point-of-view switcher, with the reasons behind Lucy wandering around at night, and Peter's longing when looking at the swords in the study, and there's Professor Kirke about to tell Edmund about how he brought Jadis to Narnia in the first place, and Susan post-The Last Battle, and ohhhh. LOVE. Beautiful language, and just eeeeee. LOVE.

These are just the fics I've read so far. Are there any others that people feel I need to read immediately?

Always Spring and Never Summer (Once a King, Always, Immortal Remix)

I am almost BEYOND WORDS for how much I loved that. Mysterious Remix Author did "Once a King", my Narnia fic, and it is gorgeous. I was reading it and thinking "OMG OMG OMG I LOVE YOU OMG".

Go read it, and leave feedback, because the author totally deserves it!

I think I'll wait until I've regained some coherency before I leave feedback myself, but just...OMG!

Anyone want to guess mine? Comments are screened. :) Betas, you're not allowed. :p

This thing isn't quite complete, but I've been searching for all these links for hours now, and it's giving me a headache; I'll probably finish...sometime later.

It should be obvious how much of a Luke fangirl I am, because most of these fics (but not all!) have him as one of the major characters.

Just the basics right now, but maybe later, once I've stared at something else for awhile, I'll come back with why I recommend these fics. Same deal as the other lists; this is mostly for me, so that I don't have to search the internet for these fics whenever I want to read them again, but if someone else benefits by me having this list, that's cool. :)

Non-HP recs

rynne: (can't be too fond of books)
Well, aren't I a wide reader. Because HP is not the only place I read fics...here's a list of my favorite non-HP fics. Most are found at ff.net, as there aren't many other popular archives for them (unlike HP). This is, again, mostly for my convenience (a nice place to store links to my favorite non-HP fics so I don't lose them), but if it's helpful to anyone else, that's great.

Current total: 70 fics in 23 different fandoms )
rynne: (Default)
Okay, practically everyone knows about my R/S reclist, but to prove that I do occasionally read things other than R/S...here's a new reclist of other HP fics I like. These are in alphabetical order as well; later, when I have time, I'll put in a bit more information, like genre or something.

Current total: 51 links )

First of all, What Really Happened (OR, How Aziraphale Learned to Stop Worrying and Start Loving the Fandom) by [livejournal.com profile] violet_quill. Don't tell me you thought LJ's downtime was a coincidence? Violet will convince you otherwise. *g* Crowley and Aziraphale...discuss certain things about the internet, with some cameos from [livejournal.com profile] copperbadge, [livejournal.com profile] daily_snitch, and more.

And! Give and Hazard by [livejournal.com profile] ariastar. It's Merchant of Venice fic! Shakespeare! [livejournal.com profile] marauderthesn, you especially need to read it--it's Bassanio/Antonio!

Everyone, go tell [livejournal.com profile] violet_quill and [livejournal.com profile] ariastar how brilliant they are.

ETA: And for Final Fantasy VII fans, Sunshine in Winter. It's just...Oh my God. Oh my God. You know, however much I love the HP fandom, it's always somehow FFVII that gives me my favorite fics, and this one has just automatically made it into the number two slot (note that number one is also a FFVII fic). This is just beautiful, and tragic, and so, so passionate, and just oh my God. If you're a fan of Yuffie and a fan of Vincent, you have to read this story. You just have to.

...Oh my God.
rynne: (ravish me padfoot)
A few notes, first of all. Some fics are archived in more than one place, but I just took the urls from the first place I found them. Also, these fics are on this list because I personally liked them and wouldn't mind rereading them, meaning this list is completely subjective. If a fic (R/S, of course) you like is not on here, you're free to comment and tell me about it (no self-plugs, please), but the possibility exists that I may have already read the fic and not liked it enough to put it on here. An author may have written a lot of R/S stuff, but these will only be my favorites of that author's fiction, and if I think that you should check out the rest of that author's stuff, I'll put an asterisk by the author's name. I used LJ usernames if I knew them, and just pennames if I didn't. They are in alphabetical order by title, followed by author, rating, chaptered or one-shot, complete or work in progress, and lastly by era (Hogwarts is Harry's Hogwarts years, post-Hogwarts is post-Harry's Hogwarts years, MWPP is Remus and Sirius's Hogwarts years up until Azkaban, Azkaban is those twelve years, and AU is...AU). If I later have the time and inclination, I'll be going back and adding a "why I recommend this fic" bit, but for now it's just the basics. Also, none of my fics are on here, but...just so you know, I recommend those too. *snicker*

This list will also be periodically updated. I'll usually add one directly when I find a new fic I like (especially as great stuff is forever being written), so check back every once in awhile and you'll probably find a few more each time. To make it easier to find the new ones, look for the red "New!" in front of the link. Also, any links that go to the Howl Kingdom don't work, just so you know. I'll probably replace them sooner or later, when I have time to go find alternate links.

THERE ARE TWO PAGES TO THIS LIST. To get to the second page, which contains links to fics with titles N-Z, click on the "Page two" link at the bottom of this list.

Now with that all over with...here we go!
