During the actual "Snape's Worst Memory" chapter of OotP, I always wondered why it was his worst memory, 'cause honestly, while getting bullied isn't pleasant, surely it wasn't the worst thing he could remember.

Now I get it, though. It's his worst memory because that's where he called Lily a Mudblood, thereby losing her friendship.

Anyway. The memories in that chapter all seem to be going in chronological order, which means that the Whomping Willow incident happened before the OWLs. For all Snape's hints, Lily doesn't seem to know that Remus is a werewolf, but she does mention James saving him on the page before the OWL memory. This means that the Whomping Willow thing doesn't seem to have any effect on MWPP--James and Sirius are still arrogant bullies, Peter's still a sycophant, and Remus is still a coward very passive.

This bothers me. A lot. It seems from the Shrieking Shack scene in PoA that it wasn't a very big deal for Remus and Sirius, and Snape was portrayed as holding a grudge for too long, which indicates that something like this wasn't the big deal in the wizarding world it would be in our society. But I always thought it would have some effect--that it perhaps would have been the catalyst for James growing up, at least. Do the four of them have no sense of consequences, even after something like this?

JKR really disappointed me by telling it that way. Gah.

More thoughts on other parts of the book, specifically characters and ships, to come later.

Sooo...has anyone written any good post-DH fic yet? I mean, set after the main part of the book and before the epilogue, because dude, I so want fic set then.

All of that hit me yesterday, yes, yes, yes. I'm so glad to see you mention it. I really thought that 'saving' Snape might have wrought a change in the dynamics of the group. Or, at the very least, separated them a little so as to stop fucking with each other. If she wasn't JKR, if she wasn't known to have notes and the like, I would think she stuck it in the wrong spot without thinking, but.

I also realized that Snape reacted the way he did after pulling Harry out of the pensieve most likely because he did not want Harry to find out then and it would have cost them both dearly. That entire chapter suddenly makes so much more sense. It's illuminating.

Yes, the 'Snape's Worst Memory' chapter certainly makes more sense now.

Re: the memories, I'm holding to the theory that JKR just mixed them up - she doesn't have the best head for timelines, after all.

the order of the spirits of harry parents in GoF is proof of this.

I had the same thought about the worst memory scene. Though I'm still not sure about the timeline; I'm not good at math, either. :)

[livejournal.com profile] copperbadge wrote a killer James Sirius/Ted Lupin fic that is amazing, to me.

PS. I wanted to thank you, personally. I've been looking for 'rules' for using colons in dialog tags and could only find YOUR site. So, thanks!
