Summary: Demyx and Axel both know that Roxas is going to leave soon. Implied Axel/Roxas/Demyx, if you squint, though really it's gen.

Demyx knew it couldn't last.

Roxas was getting edgy, growing more visibly frustrated. Sometimes Demyx caught him doing strange things with his Keyblades, throwing them away and calling them back, then looking at them intensely, as if they would help him unlock the secrets of all the worlds if only he could figure out where to point the keys.

Roxas was clearly unsatisfied with how things were. Demyx understood; sometimes he thought that being a Nobody was a constant state of dissatisfaction, a prodding feeling that there was always something more, something better, if only one could reach it.

Demyx wasn't sad. He couldn't be, not beyond a pale shadow of sadness, an echo of regret, but he couldn't help feeling that he should be sad, and that he wasn't began to nibble away at his mind.

Things were breaking apart.

Axel, too, could obviously see that something was up with Roxas, but whenever Roxas rebuffed him, which happened almost as often as it had when Roxas first joined the Organization, he burned. He started pacing, walking up and down Naught's Skyway, and whenever he passed through the Hall of Empty Melodies, Demyx watched him, fingers idly plucking sitar strings as he wondered if there was anything he could say to make things better.

Axel was fire, his element a reflection of himself, full of heat and passion and growth. Axel could dance, really dance, his steps light and quick, full of movement. He was the Flurry of Dancing Flames, with his own rhythm, and that was something Demyx could always appreciate. But fire could burn out if it wasn't carefully tended, and Demyx couldn't do that, not without smothering Axel. Somehow he knew that dousing Axel in water to cool him off would not help this time.

Roxas was going to leave soon.

Demyx knew it and didn't mention it, and Axel knew it and was in denial. Roxas was going to leave, and then he would be gone, and the light he brought with him gone too. And it was strange, that light, because Roxas wasn't cheerful, wasn't light-hearted, and it took almost too much effort to get him to smile, but while he was clearly a Nobody, he was suffused with light. It changed things. It changed people.

It changed Axel, who, before, sent up smokescreens of feeling, and who now seemed to reach for the essence of emotions. It changed Demyx, who had always been willing to go with the flow, but who now wanted to dive for something deeper. It was the illumination that made him realize such depths were possible, and now he wanted it with a desperate ache, inside him where his heart should be, and wasn't. Every time Roxas challenged Demyx to be more than the forgetful musician, every time he listened patiently to snippets of something that could become songs if he could unlock his ability to compose, Demyx felt the light, and realized anew what the Organization was fighting to achieve.

Roxas wasn't gone yet, but Demyx already missed him.

Roxas was the bridge between Demyx and Axel, the two of them forming a bond with each other as they formed separate bonds with Roxas, and then a bond between the three of them springing up and growing. But those bonds were withering now as Roxas pulled away, and Demyx didn't think he could sustain them on his own.

And, try as he might, he couldn't feel more than a shadow of regret.

I love the way you write Demyx. (And you seem to write him a lot! I liked your drabbles, too.)

It changed Axel, who, before, sent up smokescreens of feeling, and who now seemed to reach for the essence of emotions. I like that a lot, and I also like the description of Roxas as "the bridge between Demyx and Axel." For some reason, I always pictured it like that, too.

I can't help it! Demyx is so adorkable. XD I hated how unsympathetic Sora was...

Roxas being a bridge is me reconciling my "how can anyone not like Demyx?" thing with Axel saying that Roxas was the only one he liked. But Demyx clearly missed Roxas, so it wasn't hard to suppose that he and Axel were united in liking Roxas. *g*

Oh, another lovely piece! I like how you worked in the elements, and the descriptions of things. It also very right to the characters, and gav elovely insight into them!
