I think it's about time that I had a site of my own--I want a place to put all my fics and reclists and so on, without having to use someone else's webspace. (And you know, while I really appreciate those who have lent it to me, like [livejournal.com profile] vixenette, I want something I'm in control over.)

So, does anyone know of any good, free, easy-to-use hosts? Not tripod or angelfire or geocities, but any others?

Also, randomly, I totally need to go hunting for good icons. I've got space for one hundred, but am only using forty...maybe now's the time to finally figure out how to make a competent one.

[livejournal.com profile] grrliz makes beautiful fandomy ones, not just HP. She's done Star Wars, and a number of other things. [livejournal.com profile] poisoninjest is another of my favorites. She does a lot of movies, especially Shakespeare movies. She made the one I'm using here. For gorgeous, non-fandomy icons, try [livejournal.com profile] obsessiveicons or [livejournal.com profile] khushi_icons. If you like Disney, [livejournal.com profile] peaces_icons has some really nice, animated ones.

I can't help with the website stuff, unfortunately. I used to use angelfire, but it's such a pain. I haven't even bothered updating since June '04.

I love you for telling me about [livejournal.com profile] obsessiveicons. *gleefully starts uploading new icons*

Also, Westley! That icon for some reason gave me the urge to write about Westley during his time with the Dread Pirate Roberts.

I want to, but alas, it will at least have to wait until I go home for Thanksgiving, as I have neither the movie nor the book with me and I want to look up exactly what happened.

Well, I use http://www.95mb.com for one of my sites, and they seem to be pretty good.

I remember the movie. "Good night, Westley. Good work. Sleep well. I'll most likely kill you in the morning. For three years he said that."

Oh my god. I need to stop puttering around on-line and get some writing done, speaking of which. Putter is my word for the day. I've used it about four times.

I wonder why that didn't show up as a reply to your comment. That's where I put it. Odd. Totally time for me to get off-line.

dinohost.com is cheap ($6/month) but not free; they do take paypal, which makes things easy, if you want to venture into paid. They're very easy to use. I gave up on trying to find good, free ones. On that note though, if you just want a place that you can FTP to yourself (without having to rely on someone else to update), I have plenty of space on my account and would be happy to lend you a sub-domain :)

Also, now browsing [livejournal.com profile] obsessiveicons :D I have like, 35 open icon slots still. Clearly, this is a terrible thing.

Maybe I can go for a paid website when I've got an actual job, but for now I'm dependent on my parents for all my money, and I don't know if they'd want me to use their money to put up a bunch of fanfic on the internet when I can do that without paying. :p

As for a sub-domain, that'd be great! Um, would I still have control over the background and stuff? *is nearly completely ignorant about websites* Also, you might have to give me an FTP tutorial--I know enough to upload FA's AstronomyTower every week, but that's basically just putting things into a folder from my computer on the FTP side, and I'm sure there's more to know.

Thanks! :D

Good reason, that... hehe.

Yeah, you'd have control over everything, and you can probably get one of those cjb.net addresses to hide my domain if you wanted.

As for FTP, if you know how to create a website and save it to a folder on your computer (either by hand or using some sort of program), that's it, really. From then on, either you use an FTP client, or the built-in windows FTP client which is basically click-and-drag, and it's up online. It's pretty easy when you get the hang of it :D So yeah, let me know if you want to do that... shoot me an e-mail with the username and password that you want and it's all yours.

Freewebs is (to me) easy to use and without Geocities's awful popup add things. www.freewebs.com

You have the option of using html or the freewebs alternative if you don't know how.
