Okay. So the problem with installing Windows XP resolved itself last night (and I have no idea how. I left it installing one last time while I went on the big computer, and then I go back to my room to go to bed and all and it finished installing and properly and all o.O), but...

Yes, there's always that "but" there, isn't there? -_-;

But...I still do not have the internet. My network adaptor card needed to be updated to go with XP rather than 98, and I thought that that would be a simple process--put in the disc I first used to install it, and install it again. I should have known that things are never so easy with my laptop.

It completed installing, and got to restarting to finish the installation and all that, and then I get a message saying that the computer isn't connected to the network because the previous installation is now outdated, or something like that, and please reinstall using the CD.

I've been reinstalling using the CD! Every time I try, it installs just fine, and then tells me it's outdated.

Some of you understand technology! What am I doing wrong?

Also, randomly...

Hello, all the 200 people who have friended me now! Look at how supremely uninteresting my journal is. :p Want to introduce yourselves? I've no idea how some of you got here...

There IS no understanding Microsoft, just some people who pretend a lot better than others.

One thing, in case you haven't tried it yet...if they've updated the driver software for your network card, the new driver might be available as a download from that company's website. Which is a pain in the neck if the whole point is that you CAN'T log on to the network...but if it is possible to download onto a CD from another computer, it might be worth a shot...

Unless your network card is very old. Some companies have an ugly habit of not updating drivers and forcing the purchase of new equipment.

And I could be way off base, it's just the next thing I would try in your place.

Halloooo! Sadly I can be of no help - I'm not one of those technologically-minded people that seem to understand computers :( I just thought I'd introduce myself as I friended you the other day (you have a fantastic sirius/remus reclist, I couldn't help myself!)*waves*
:D

I'm lost when it comes to fixing windows machines. Now if you had a mac that would be a different story.

Anyway, saying hi, introducing myself. (I'm a library school grad student.) I saw you on a friend's friends page and something you said amused me. I'm always looking for more people to add, to read on my downtime at the reference desk.

Ahahaha, ohh, how I understand that! I intern in a library, and Fridays, when I go in, are always really slow, so sometimes I just stand at checkout or reference and be mindnumbingly bored. Or rather, reference has chairs, so I sit and be bored. :p

Glad to have amused you! Dunno how often that will happen, though...:p
