Apr. 30th, 2004 09:05 am*WHOOOOOOOSH*
Ahem. That is the sound of my contentment getting washed down the drain.
The virus came back and re-reset my homepage to something that spews forth ads. Like barf. Disgusting, really--virus-dude, I do not want porno ads popping up on my screen for no reason.
Roommate might see.
The virus continued spewing forth ads as I was trying to do disk defrag--left my computer alone for an hour or so trying to defrag and when I came back, it wasn't even at one percent.
So, I am in a campus computer lab, and will probably have to sneak everything HP and NC-17 past the watchful eyes of people waiting to swoop down on this computer and claim it for themselves.
Thank you, laptop, for leaving me bereft in this trying time of studying for finals. You were the only thing that kept me sane. Oh woe is me.
And I have to go to class in ten minutes. Damn damn damn damn damn.
Well, I'll be seeing later how much time I'll be able to spend online. *sigh* Such a bad time for my computer to get like this...

Also, go into Program Files > Internet Explorer and delete anything with the phrase 'plug-in' in it.
Good luck!

Date: 2004-04-30 07:39 pm (UTC)In Spybot, if you click on immunize, you can select certain options so it'll auto block some damaging files that'll feed your computer pop-ups. Doesn't work for sites like ff.net, but I've stopped getting those annoying self-installing files that exist just to be a pain in the ass.
Ad-aware's good. I also use Spyware Remover from BulletProofSoft.com. I think it works nicely, although Spybot will pick it up as a malware simply because it uses the same technology. Spyware Remover is a shareware though...there's a trial you can download (and if you like it, you can search or ask me for a crack). :D Or if you can afford it, unlike me, you can buy it.
PestPatrol's nice too, although that's also a shareware.
Try finding the source of your ads. Right-clicking on the windows and checking the properties from the sites then plugging them into google can sometimes lead you to removal instructions (worked like a charm for me) which can help you remove the auto-installed files on your computer. They'll help you remove memory keys too which helps it from self-generating. That's a lesson I had to learn the hard way...
