This is very ironic, coming on the heels of my last post. Maybe the world doesn't want me to like Steven Moffat? *ponders*

I very sincerely hope that this is the tabloids blowing things out of proportion, and that what really is there will make sense with context. I...really need to hope that.

But if it's exactly what the tabloids are saying, and basically another single-story romance...I think I will probably give up on ever watching S5. If Steven Moffat can't be bothered to respect the character arcs already set up, I don't think I can trust him to run a good show. I was already dubious about his ability, but these rumors have just exponentially increased my doubts.

If Moffat keeps giving the Doctor random love interests, making him really another Captain Kirk or James Bond, then I'll feel like he's cheapening the Doctor's feelings. He lasted for nine hundred years without more than one love interest (Susan's grandmother--and even she is only implied by the existence of Susan), and if one of the results of the Time War seems to be to make him more reluctant to connect with people because he'll inevitably lose them, which is canon, then giving him more love interests just doesn't make sense.

His previous--hmm, not asexuality, but maybe celibacy--emphasized how different his connection with Rose was, and made his relationship with her mean something. I only just managed to come to terms with Reinette, but introducing this River Song (gag, that name) as a love interest, whether or not romance happens in the episodes or in the future, feels like it will just cheapen his feelings for Rose. Feelings that, btw, were constantly explored and respected throughout all four seasons thus far.

Not to mention that it's very difficult to create a believable relationship in two episodes. I doubt I'd be able to believe it.

I hope the rumors are blown all out of proportion. In the mid-season trailer, we got no hint of anything like this. Of course, not everything is shown in the trailer, but what we did get emphasized how important Rose is. And even the trailer at the end of the last episode made no mention of anything like this. Surely it's the kind of thing they would put in the trailer, like how they had the clip of Jenny calling the Doctor "Dad".

But if it does happen the way the tabloids say...I guess I'll just always think of Steven Moffat as a douche, even more than I do now.

I know I'm saying this as someone who has a much higher tolerance for Steven Moffat than you do, but: it's entirely possible that Moffat just keeps getting assigned/does not mind and thus volunteers to write the one-off romance episodes. If it's really just the thing he likes to do, and s5 turns out to be the Series Of Ten's Whirlwind Affairs, I'll be incredibly disappointed. As of right now I am assuming that [a] the tabloids are probably exaggerating and [b] Moffat's probably just writing for the story he was given, not coming up with brilliant ideas! about the Doctor's string of one-off lovers. *crosses fingers*

Not to disagree with this - I wouldn't be surprised if it was true - but RTD has said on a couple of occasions in DWM that he just lets Moffat do what he wants and come up with the story that he wants to tell.

See, I actually have other-Doctor ships. I ship him with Romana and I consider his relationship with Jo Grant to be more than the norm. But introducing someone in one or two episodes just doesn't work for me, especially not at this point in his life.

Even if he's healing from losing Rose, he's not going to jump into something. He was very clear to Donna and Martha in this respect — he doesn't want that. Why would it be different for this River Song?

Thing is, with another writer I might be able to trust the whole timey-wimey element to not cheapen things and feel out of the character arc, but I don't trust Moffat.

Is it actually canon that the Doctor's only ever had a romance with Susan's grandmother? Because, I mean, 900 years? I find that a little bit unlikely. Besides, if the rumors are true and this is a romance FROM HIS FUTURE, that could put River (omg name WUT) waaaay beyond the end of the Rose thing -- who knows how long into his future? -- and these episodes might just be him having to DEAL with that in a way that we haven't seen before. Honestly, I've been wanting to see him deal with the fallout from his own future for a LONG time. The end of The Shakespeare Code had a glimpse of it, but he ran away like he always does. I want to see him deal with it. I think I may be the only one, but all names aside, I am effing EXCITED for these eps!
