May. 10th, 2008 04:24 pmI really liked Jenny! I was hoping I would. Georgia Moffet really pulled off that innocence, a girl who's a soldier who doesn't know anything else and just acts completely naturally, even as she learns better. That was great. And she lived! That's perfect.
Her relationship with the Doctor was also great, as was his reaction to her. Him not wanting to really accept it, because it reminded him of all that he'd lost, but eventually being able to because she wants to learn from him and make him proud. That hug, after she didn't kill General Cobb, was really sweet, and actually felt pretty father-daughter to me. The two of them were really rather adorable together.
Though, oh Jenny. The Doctor doesn't want to agree that he's a soldier because he was, and it hurt him so deeply. That's not who he wants to be. He may have good tools and know how to strategize, but that's only part of what might make someone a soldier.
When Donna was ribbing him about having a daughter in the TARDIS cramping his style, I had to think of One and Susan, of course. I was hoping that he'd mention that he once traveled with his granddaughter, but telling Donna that he'd once been a dad was still awesome. I'm glad he's finding it easier to talk about that stuff.
DONNA YOU WERE AWESOME. Feminine wiles! Figuring out that the numbers were dates! Encouraging Jenny to keep confounding the Doctor! Being tough but sympathetic and just a really good friend. Though her verbalizing wanting "forever" is practically the kiss of death, especially since we know Catherine Tate is only doing one season. I am increasingly nervous about how she'll leave.
The Doctor with a gun will never not be scary. I have to admit I wondered a bit, but I really liked that he was just making a point. He also sorta canonized himself there, but not really--he said "a man who never would", rather than "the man who never would", using the indefinite article rather than the definite. He just wants the concept passed down, rather than being specifically remembered.
Sorta random now, but I watched Genesis of the Daleks last night, and humans vs Hath reminded me of Thals vs Kaleds, in that the war was just going on and on and no one really quite knew why except that the other side had to be exterminated. I'm glad the humans and Hath got a much better ending.
This was actually a pretty good episode. :) And now what I really want is for Jenny to meet Rose and them to have adventures, between Rose looking for the Doctor, because that would be awesome. *g*

They really were so cute together, weren't they? The whole Doctor's daughter plot turned out to be way less annoying than I thought it would be. I really liked their interaction. :)

Date: 2008-05-11 11:48 pm (UTC)What about the Doomsday Confidential made you hate the episode? Was it the bit where RTD said that the Doctor was getting too close to settling down, so they had to be separated? I was...not very pleased at that, personally. :p

Date: 2008-05-12 12:36 am (UTC)In a word, yes. If I had to make a list of things I like about Doctor Who, the Doctor himself wouldn’t be anywhere near the top. But his journey would be the second thing on the list. So for RTD to say what he said (and especially when he said it)… well, anyway, then I watched “The Runaway Bride,” and I decided that if I had to choose between believing what RTD said in interviews and believing what he said in the episodes themselves, I’d take door number two.

Date: 2008-05-11 05:02 am (UTC)But ohhhh, the implications of Jenny still being alive. EEP! The things that could happen!

Date: 2008-05-11 08:08 am (UTC)And OMG Jenny/Master would make the Doctor's brain EXPLODE. XDYes, Kaleds. A Kaled named Davros was basically like an Old Skool John Lumic (from RotC/AoS), because he created the first Daleks (the anagram is a sort of conceit, I guess) and then sort of made the Kaleds mutate/evolve into Daleks. It's weird.

Date: 2008-05-12 02:25 am (UTC)ANYWAY. Jennyfic, yes, you should write some! What an amazing opportunity to watch a character discover what it is to be a Time Lord. Oooh.
