So I've been watching Classic Who, and now I'm in the middle of the Third Doctor. Today I watched The Green Death, and couldn't help but notice some similarities to Nine and Rose--and some dissimilarities as well.

Jo said that Professor Jones was like a younger version of the Doctor, and he said he wasn't sure whether to be insulted or flattered. I bet Nine was thinking of that in The Doctor Dances. Poor guy. I haven't seen that much of Jo, since Netflix doesn't have many Three serials, but they seem to have cared very much for each other, and I liked Jo very much for how protective she was of him in The Three Doctors. But I bet it hurt the Doctor, to have Rose echo Jo like that.

And when he produced that crystal and said he did manage to get to Metebelis III, I felt like he was basically saying, "Look, Jo, I can dance!" His version of dancing, though, which, while not the huge metaphor for sex it was in The Doctor Dances, was still definitely one-upmanship.

I've seen several Three/Jo fics, but the impression I got, from this episode at least, was actually pretty parental. After the argument in the beginning about going to Metebelis III vs going to Wales, the Doctor said something along the lines of "Every fledgling must fly the nest". And when he made an excuse to get Cliff away from the room Jo would be sleeping in, I admit my first thought was "he's jealous", but then I thought about it, and combined with the fledgling comment, it feels far more like a father trying to keep boys away from his daughter. *g*

As opposed to Nine, who was really blatantly jealous of Jack. Three, when he meets Cliff, despite Jo's comment, is nice and rather flattering. Nine, when he meets Jack, is abrasive and insulting. Nine ends up appreciative of Jack, but still possessive of Rose (and Jack seems to have gotten the message, because he does not flirt with Rose at all after The Doctor Dances). Three is very accepting of Jo's attachment to Cliff. I think Nine could have been accepting of Rose choosing someone else, since he's had several centuries of practice at accepting that kind of thing, but even in Boomtown when Rose went off with Mickey, there was a pining quality to Nine that I didn't see in Three.

I do think Three was sad to lose Jo, of course. Watching him drive off alone at the end of the serial made me wibble. But it also made me appreciate Rose that much more. She chooses to dance with the Doctor rather than Jack at the end of The Doctor Dances, and has consistently chosen him ever since. I love that the Doctor finally had someone who chose him, and God, how much do I want him to have that back.

I got the impression from some Classic Who fans that watching the old series would make me less inclined to ship Doctor/Rose. It seems to have had the opposite effect. *g*

I've never actually seen The Green Death, but I've seen a few others with Jo and I do love her to bits.

My feelings on Three/Jo is... complicated. I sort of ship, but at the same time I get parental vibes. It sort of falls into my "he's a Time Lord" category. I see it as being more than just friendship, but completely free of any sexual undertones.

I have plenty of Classic Who ships, but the old stuff does nothing to change the relationship between the Doctor and Rose, except providing more info on his past. However, if you started with the classic stuff, I can see why you'd not be so keen on the direction the show was going in now!
