Apr. 2nd, 2008 09:07 pmI pretty much never watch movies/shows based on the actors, but I did something completely new to me, and decided to download Blackpool because David Tennant's one of the main characters. I've now watched the first two episodes.
I like the premise. It's sorta funny to me, though--I was born in Nevada and I've lived around casinos and slot machines my entire life. I can't help but sporfle a bit at seeing Ripley Holden's dinky little casino (oops, amusement arcade. Ahahahaha!) and how proud he is of it, 'cause I've seen better casinos in towns that only have ~1000 people. Heh.
Also, I love musicals, so that aspect makes me smile. The accompanying dance numbers can be pretty funny, too, like the one for "These Boots Were Made For Walking".
David Tennant...is really sexy. I mean, I expected that, but rawr, his native accent! I don't mind his accent as the Doctor, but the Scottish? I could probably happily listen to him reading the phone book. Also, he keeps eating things, and showing his tongue. *flails*
But I'm not sure if I want to watch any more, and that's for one reason: Peter and Natalie. There is very little that squicks me like cheating, especially in people I'm supposed to like. I can accept it in Ripley, because, as Peter said, he's a prick. But, despite the sexiness of Tennant, I'm almost completely turned off by Peter pursuing a woman who is knows is not only married, but is married to his chief suspect! Natalie I can understand a bit more, since she doesn't know about Peter being the detective investigating the case her husband is involved in, and she's not sure about what she's doing. I just...gah. I hate cheating. I want to watch this show, because I know lots of people like it, and DT is a good actor, even if I don't like what his character is doing...but this is such a turn-off, for me. I'm gonna have to think about this.

Date: 2008-04-03 07:18 am (UTC)OMG I know *fans self* I sometimes listen to the Doctor Who audio books that he has read at night because his accent is so calming and amazing. :D

Yeah, I had this same problem when I was watching Blackpool. I basically watched all six episodes just to watch DT's performance. But I'd suggest finishing it; it wasn't too bad, and it's well worth it just for DT's acting. :)

Date: 2008-04-03 03:58 pm (UTC)I actually didn't mind the cheating -- and of course, to date, they haven't actually DONE anything yet. (I've watched the first two as well.) I can't figure out yet if Peter's pursuing her for real or if he's just trying to get to Ripley (either way would be a bit douchey, the second far more so), but I have very little sympathy for a woman who stays in a shitty marriage like that. So I was pretty much staring at my screen going "JUST LEAVE HIM ALREADY."
Anyway. Ep3 tonight!

Date: 2008-04-04 01:35 am (UTC)Shallow, me?Cheating is one of my ironclad squicks. Frankly, I can't recall any book/movie/show/whatever I've seen that includes cheating where I'm all right with it. Natalie I sympathize with more, like I said, but I'd rather she left Ripley, then got with Peter. As for Peter, I'm pretty sure he honestly wants her, but it's still such a stupid, stupid thing to do. Completely aside from the skeeviness of pursuing a woman he knows is married (and they have at least kissed by now), she's bound to find out that he's investigating her husband and son for murder, and what does he think she'll do then? Idiot.
Let me know how the ep goes? I don't mind being spoiled, and I'd rather know what I'm in for.

Date: 2008-04-04 02:06 pm (UTC)I didn't end up watching ep3 last night, as (a) my computer is royally fucked, and (b) I ended up in Brooklyn instead where I saw the Spanish Harlem Orchestra and Paul Simon (ahhh, life!). But I'll let you know when I do watch it!

Date: 2008-04-03 04:57 pm (UTC)I actually didn't mind the cheating cause Ripley's a prick and it's DT with Sarah Parish. that sold it for me.DT&SP are one of my fave on-screen couples, after DT&BP

Date: 2008-04-04 01:37 am (UTC)I don't really care about actors. DT is the first in like, ever, that I've actually paid attention to beyond his role. But I don't care about Sarah Parish, or DT with SP, I care that Peter Carlisle's being a skeevy idiot, and that's sorta ruining it for me. :(

Date: 2008-04-04 01:43 am (UTC)I do think he honestly has feelings for Natalie, but...that doesn't excuse it at all, in my mind. Plus, he's lying to her (lie of omission, if nothing else), which just seems a recipe for disaster when she finds out, as she inevitably will. Cheating is just one of my ironclad squicks, so that plus the lying means I'm just really turned off by the Peter/Natalie relationship.
