So, I've played this game all the way through three times now since I got it three weeks ago (I know, I know, very bad of me, but I couldn't help it, I love the game), so now here's some vaguely incoherent thoughts that won't get out of my head, even though I'm studying for one of my finals. Probably no one cares, since I think [livejournal.com profile] imadra_blue is the only other one on my flist who's actually played it, but eh.

The beginning is very pretty, but a total recap of KH1 and CoM. I hadn't played CoM at the time (well, I still haven't played it, but I read the script), so that was new to me, as was the Roxas part, but I otherwise found the beginning sort of boring, since it was composed of FMVs I already saw in KH1.

Pretty much throughout the Roxas bit, I was going omgwtfbbq! where's Sora? And I wanted Sora back. Except then Roxas grew on me and I felt really sorry for him, and after I did get Sora, I just wanted Roxas back. :p

Nobodies really got the short end of the stick, Roxas especially. Roxas would pretty much either continue as his own personality, but be half a person, without a heart, or join with Sora, gaining a heart and being whole, but becoming Sora instead of still being Roxas. Poor guy...

WTF is up with all these people saying that Nobodies don't really exist? I think it'd be more accurate to say that they shouldn't, but they do. I mean, dude. What exactly are the qualifications for existence? I totally think that if people can see you and you can talk to people and be hit with a giant key, you exist. And they may not have hearts anymore, but they have to have something. I would imagine that people who are truly without hearts would be totally apathetic, not have this gigantic ambition to create Kingdom Hearts and become whole again.

Why do Mickey and Riku wear Organization cloaks?

The Heartless...aren't really heartless; the Nobodies are the ones who really lack hearts. The Heartless just have corrupted hearts.

Wow, the people in this game love belts and zippers. Sora's outfit especially must be a headache for people to draw (though I love it so much better than the red one).

Sora is SO ADORABLE. "Then we can go see Santa!" XD And Riku calling him a sap! And then him making that face at Riku and saying "Like this" when Riku asks how he can face everyone! Dude, Sora, you are such a dork, and I love you for it.

Speaking of dorks, DEMYX. He totally wasn't cut out to be a villain. His very first line was "Run! Run away!" XD He reads from cue cards and wields a sitar and has a mullet. Demyx is AWESOME. When I was going through my second play-through and I got to the second Demyx fight in Hollow Bastion, I was so depressed because it meant he was going to die soon...then I stopped being depressed when he and that damn timer kept kicking my ass. That was one of the only battles I had more trouble with on Proud mode than Standard.

Speaking of, Proud mode was disappointingly easy. Not much harder than Standard, really; in Standard I only died in the battle against Xaldin (well, I would have died if Mickey hadn't kept saving me). In Proud, I died against the second Demyx (though only when I ran out of time with the damn water clones), Xaldin, and the last incarnation of Xemnas (though only when I was Riku). I even went through Proud mode pretty much underleveled; I beat it at level 49, which is, I think, the lowest level I've ever been when beating a game. Of course, the entire game only took me three days, all three times I played it, so. :p

The World That Never Was is the most awesome final dungeon I've played through in almost a decade of gaming. I'm fond of Ultimecia's castle (though VIII was not my favorite FF) and Memoria in FFIX, but dude. I apparently have a thing for castles, but there were some awesomely titled rooms in The Castle That Never Was. The Hall of Empty Melodies? Naught's Skyway? Ruin and Creation's Passage? Dude. Love. Also, Riku in my party is full of awesome.

I love the Organization. I'm usually not fond of villains (well, Sephiroth is another exception), but they were so sympathetic! Except for the original six, it totally wasn't their fault that they were Nobodies, and I totally can't blame them for feeling incomplete and wanting a heart. And I still don't understand what was so bad about their goal. :p I mean, some of them were completely batshit, like Saix and Xemnas, but then there were Axel, Roxas, and Demyx. I'm rather fond of Xigbar and Luxord too. But while I think that some of the things they were doing to achieve their goal were bad, I don't think their goal, in itself, was. Except for Xemnas, 'cause he wanted to gain control of Kingdom Hearts for himself, but all the others just wanted hearts.

Has anyone ever called Sora a Gary Stu? 'Cause he totally is. I mean, dude, one of the commonly-accepted fandom definitions for a Mary Sue/Gary Stu is a new character who takes over the story from the canon characters, but who the canon characters really like, and THAT'S TOTALLY SORA. That's what he does in all the Disney worlds. HE GOT TO DRIVE STEAMBOAT WILLIE. Well, the Disney characters usually get most of the credit, but still. And Kairi is totally a Canon Sue, considering how she (and the other Princesses of Heart) have no darkness in their hearts, and everyone is focused on saving her, and so on. Not that I particularly care that Kairi and Sora are Sueish, since I've always been lenient on Sues, especially when they're canon, but this is just an observation. I love Sora anyway. XD

Not that fond of Kairi, though, but that's mostly because she seems to be more of a symbol than a person. She's integral to the plot, but has comparatively little screen time. She herself hasn't done much besides be kidnapped, kill a few Heartless with a keyblade Riku gave her once Namine helps her escape, and send a letter to Sora that helps bring him and Riku home. She just hasn't done much to give me an emotional investment in her. So in terms of shipping, though I know Sora/Kairi is totally canon, I'm more into Sora/Riku because that's interesting. Maybe, if KH3 is made and Kairi has a larger role, I'll start caring about her enough to want to ship her with someone, but as it is, Sora/Riku is just more interesting.

I'd be totally into Riku/Sora/Kairi, though, since they really are made to be a trio. It's just that if I had to split them off into a pairing and an outsider, I'd rather it be Sora/Riku and Kairi than Sora/Kairi and Riku. Kairi would probably handle it better anyway.

Sora/Demyx is full of win, too--or it would be if Sora was a bit more open-minded--'cause both of them are complete dorks and they could have all sorts of fun together.

I'm also more into Roxas/Axel than Roxas/Namine (even though that also seems to be canon), because I don't think Roxas and Namine really knew each other. I think the only reason they got as close as they did was because they're Sora's and Kairi's Nobodies, and I guess there was some sort of sympathetic reaction or something. But Roxas and Axel have history, and Roxas and Namine don't, really, so I'm more interested in Roxas/Axel than Roxas/Namine. Besides, I'm sorta playing with the idea that Roxas and Namine are like twins--they were born at the same time in the same way (Sora keyblade-ing himself in Hollow Bastion). And pretty much all the interactions they have could be interpreted as sibling-like; I mean, hey, if my twin were in some data-based alternate Twilight Town, I'd probably hijack the data in order to meet her and help her out and stuff, and, like in the ending, I'd be happy about being able to be with her whenever our original selves were together. (College has been such a weird experience, considering I spent eight months here without her. Four days until I go home and can see her again!) Anyway. I know my theory will never ever be proved canon or anything, as I'm sure that Roxas/Namine is as canon a ship as Sora/Kairi. But I think it makes sense enough to use in any AU KH fic I may or may not be thinking of writing...

Now that I've droned on about ships, which I really am comparatively not interested in... :p More on the actual game!

Jiminy's journal sucks leik whoa to complete. Hurrah for playing the game on Proud mode so as to not need to do it in order to see the secret ending! Except I'm doing it anyway, since I'm just obsessive like that. :p The only things I haven't done are Poster Duty (30 seconds WTFNO), Sephiroth, the Ruins thing in Agrabah, Titan Paradox Cup and Hades Paradox Cup, and getting enough orbs for Titan, Goddess of Fate, Cerberus Paradox, Titan Paradox, and Hades Paradox. Getting all the synthesis notes I just completed today, and honestly, this is the only game I've ever played where I got to level 99 through pursuing a side-quest, rather than just getting everyone to 99 after everything was done because I'm obsessive about doing everything.

The Olympus Coliseum was one of my favorite worlds, because 1) that's where you meet Demyx, who is AWESOME, and 2) you can have AURON in your party! Auron! A Final Fantasy character! In your party! That was all sorts of win. Except I didn't particularly care for him saying "This is my story", as I thought it was stupid with Tidus in FFX, stupider with Yuna in X-2, and now it's just tedious.

Timeless River is second only to The World That Never Was in terms of awesomeness. It's STEAMBOAT WILLIE. Dude!

Maleficent amused me. She was so delusional in this game that I just had to love her. XD

The Nobody symbol is amazingly phallic.

After the second Demyx battle, when Goofy got hit on the head and Sora, Mickey, and Donald thought he died? It never occurred to me to think that he actually did. I mean, dude. Square may not have a problem with killing off their main characters (Aeris, of course, but there's also Tellah of FFIV), but I can't imagine Disney being willing to kill Goofy. So it was a surprise to come online later and read that people actually thought he died. o.O

Sora as a lion cub in the Pride Lands? OMG ADORABLE. Though I don't know why he wanted to be king; it's not like he was even really a lion...

I loved the entire ending. Well, even before that, with the final battle and Riku being the one you fight it with--I loved that. Also XEMNAS WITH LIGHTSABERS AHAHAHA and now I totally have to write a SW/KH crossover where Xemnas is one of Palpatine's apprentices. XD But I digress. I just loved the entire ending, especially Donald, Goofy, and Mickey being on the island too, and Mickey jumping up to hug Riku as Sora is dogpiled by Donald and Goofy. That was just full of yay.

There were a few things that disappointed me, though.

Everything was completely straightforward, and you pretty much always knew exactly what you had to do. It made things much easier, I think. I remember wandering all over the place in KH1, trying to figure out where I needed to go next to advance the story, especially in worlds like Wonderland and Deep Jungle and Atlantica, and while that frustrated me at times, I liked it better.

Most worlds only seemed to have secondary significance to the plot, through Maleficent and Pete's plan. Mickey, of course, was totally important, as were Donald and Goofy, and I loved that you could go to Disney Castle, but most worlds, like Agrabah, Halloween Town, Pride Lands...they just seemed to be there to inject more Disney into the game. I think KH1 did better at integrating the Disney worlds into the main plot.

I did not like Cure taking all my MP, kthx. I didn't mind MP Charge that much, but I didn't like Cure taking all my MP.

I think the plot could have had so much more depth than it did. I really hated Yen Sid for saying that Nobodies don't really feel and are only pretending--it goes back to what I said in the beginning, about even if they didn't have hearts, they had to have something, because I can't imagine how they can have goals and ambitions if they don't feel anything at all. And Sora was so close-minded about it, it really pissed me off. This is the guy DiZ described as being "far too nice for his own good", and he's totally unwilling to try to see the other side. I suppose it's a side-effect of the game's focus on darkness and light, and the whole black-or-white view of things, but I found the refusal to admit shades of gray frustrating.

I continue to hate Donald's voice. It's too nasally, and sometimes it's really hard to decipher what he's saying.

Overall, I loved the game. Of course, I've played it through three times in as many weeks, and would probably have already started a fourth if it wasn't finals week, so. :p And now I'll shut up, since it's getting late and this thing is long enough as it is.

It's really funny, but I think I almost completely agree with you on every point you brought up. Even on characters and pairings and reactions. XD It's rare for me to actually agree so much with someone. ^_^ The potential the game brought up is like the potential Star Wars brings up for me. There's a lot of fun and things to explore there.

I never had the urge to fic KH1, but once the Nobodies and their potential were introduced--BAM! Tons of ideas. There's just so much we can do with them...

Sora/Riku and Roxas/Axel are my sooper sekrit OTP's.

I haven't managed to beat it once yet because I am a h0r about having 100% complete. All I have left is the Hades Paradox Cup (which is insanely hard and I am lvl 99) then I have to kill Mansex Xemnas' last 3 forms. If I didn't spend so much time on line reading fic I would have been done a month ago.

That and I keep staring in awe at the fact my son is about to fight Xigbar and he's playing the game without help. And he's 5. Everyone is convinced he somehow reads the strategy guide even though we know he doesn't know how to read. If he get stuck, he pauses the game, finds the page where he is at, stares at it for about five minutes, and gets through the rest of the level. Weird.

I have a tendency not to Summon or use half my Drive forms, and even though I've been remedying that and leveling them up, it's why I don't even have Hades Paradox as an option yet. :p

KH fic? Have any recs? It's depressingly hard to find good fic in that fandom.

Also, your son amazes me. Wow.

there's a bit here (http://community.livejournal.com/khfanfiction/) but you will have to filter through pairings. Also over at [livejournal.com profile] riku_x_sora there's a bit. Like you said hard to find good fic. I've been reading fic from 3-4 fandoms lately because good fic is so hard to find.

Sorry for the late reply but I just found this!

Proud mode WAS really easy, I've played the final boss about a million times and I'm down to where I only need to use 1 potion, if that, to finish him off. Riku does the rest. I was disappointed in a way, but I'm glad it was easier, because KH1 final bosses were BITCHES. Just thinking about it makes me cry.

Speaking of Riku, isn't the Riku/Sora move with them spinning around, so CUTE? I started giggling when I first saw it, and did it a bunch more times just to stare. xD

I TOTALLY agree, there should be more Riku/Sora/Kairi. I don't like Kairi alone or shipped with anyone else but those three are the exception.

So it was a surprise to come online later and read that people actually thought he died. o.O

Agreed, once again. I kept thinking 'LAME' when it happened, because I knew he wasn't dead, and Sora didn't freak out that much.

The game was too drawn out, going back to worlds 2 times and doing a bunch more stuff, I kept thinking 'LET'S GET ON WITH IT'. With KH1, I never thought that, I didn't want it to be over. Maybe I just wanted to see Riku in KHII and was impatient, but the 2 worlds thing still annoyed me. The cutscenes could be really drawn out too. ><

But, hell, we all love it anyway. :D

Also, I hope so badly that KH3 comes out, Tetsuya Nomura commented in an interview that it may come out or it might just stay in his head. ; ; FF13 looks amazing too. =D

...No Cure? I practically never use items, but I love Cure. XD Never had a problem with the KH1 final bosses, though. It's been awhile since I beat that game, but I remember beating it easily at around level 60 in Expert. *shrugs*

Speaking of Riku, isn't the Riku/Sora move with them spinning around, so CUTE? I started giggling when I first saw it, and did it a bunch more times just to stare. xD

Ohhh yeah. I love Riku's limit. It made me happy. :D Well, Sora and Riku getting to work together made me happy. *g*

I TOTALLY agree, there should be more Riku/Sora/Kairi. I don't like Kairi alone or shipped with anyone else but those three are the exception.

I just don't care enough about Kairi to ship her with anyone, but as long as all four relatioships (Sora/Kairi, Riku/Kairi, Riku/Sora, and all three together) are treated as pretty much equally important, I'd be happy. I like Sora/Riku a lot, but I can't deny that Kairi is immensely important to both of them.

Agreed, once again. I kept thinking 'LAME' when it happened, because I knew he wasn't dead, and Sora didn't freak out that much.

Well, I hadn't expected Sora to freak out that much, or Donald and Mickey, considering they were sorta in the middle of a war zone and had things to take care of. :p But I just can't imagine how anyone could have believed that Disney would kill Goofy.

The game was too drawn out, going back to worlds 2 times and doing a bunch more stuff, I kept thinking 'LET'S GET ON WITH IT'. With KH1, I never thought that, I didn't want it to be over. I totally agree that the cutscenes were too drawn out--dude, I play games to play games, not watch movies. I didn't mind playing through the worlds again, though I really wish the Organization had had more of a visible presence; the Xigbar appearance in Land of Dragons and Xaldin fight in Beast's Castle weren't enough to make up for the lack of Organization in most other worlds, though I was happy with Luxord in Port Royal. And I wanted Riku too, but about a week before I got the game, I saw a friend levelling up in the World That Never Was with Riku in his party, so I was a bit spoiled. :p

I loved this game, though, and I really hope that KH3 is made. I want to know what was up with the secret ending.

...Out of curiosity, how'd you find this?

Oh yeah, Cure once. xD And I was 54 when I beat KH1, maybe that's why it was so tough.

And I wanted Riku too, but about a week before I got the game, I saw a friend levelling up in the World That Never Was with Riku in his party, so I was a bit spoiled. :p

I was spoiled as well, but on what Riku looked like (aka, Ansem) by reading the art book that came extra with the strat. guide.
