So I'm in Santa Cruz, and it only took us eleven hours to get here. Eleven hours. It's a trip that normally takes five hours, but I-80 out of Reno was closed, so we had to go through South Tahoe, and traffic was horrible. Gah. But that was yesterday. When we got here, it was sorta late and I'd gotten up early, so I just took a book and went to bed instead of updating LJ. What a wonderful New Year's Day...

But anyway, today we went to see Memoirs of a Geisha.

I read the book last year, but unlike with Harry Potter, Narnia, and Lord of the Rings, I didn't remember enough of it to tell whether more than the general plot was correct. I did notice a few things they left out, like a lot of the beginning, but that's not a surprise, and it was still two and a half hours.

It was a wonderful movie, though. There was a bunch of Japanese in the beginning, most of which I didn't understand; I could only pick out a few words, like musume (daughter) and watashi (I/me). But I knew all the other words in the movie, since they only used easy stuff after the beginning, like okaasan (mother), konbanwa (good evening/night), and arigatou (thank you). Once I've gotten farther in Japanese, maybe I'll watch this movie again and be able to understand what they're saying in the beginning.

I thought all the actors were wonderful, even if Sayuri was played by a Chinese woman. I thought Hasumomo was great, even though her character is awful. And I still felt horrible for Pumpkin, like I did in the book. Chiyo and Satsu were adorable, as was young!Pumpkin. But though I like Sayuri and Mameha, I think Hasumomo was just great.

Very good movie. I definitely recommend that people see it.

Wow, I'm watching so many movies lately. I've seen more movies (in the theater) in the past month than I have in the past year.

I totally want to write [livejournal.com profile] blanketforts, but I think I'll start tomorrow. [livejournal.com profile] shackinup_sesa was a good start, but I need to get back into the R/S swing of things, and I didn't do either [livejournal.com profile] dogdaysofsummer or [livejournal.com profile] scarvesnhats. I also need to write Narnia fic, His Dark Materials fic, and Star Wars slash (because I've been in that fandom for six months and haven't written any slash for it yet. I'm amazed at myself. Now the only question is whether I should write Obi-Wan slash or Luke slash).

But will start stuff tomorrow, because I've got books to read that I've never read before. :D!

Heh. I do think I'll do both, but the question becomes, which one first? (Since I don't want to do Obi-Wan/Luke; I can't think of a scenario where that would make sense in my head.)

Luke! Just because in my experience there's less of it than Obi-wan slash. *g*

It's 'cause Obi-Wan/Anakin is like the most popular pairing on LJ. :p I can't quite imagine it myself, since Anakin/Padme is so very canon and the O/A relationship seems too fatherly/brotherly/friendly.

I keep wanting to write Luke/Wedge, though, especially between ANH and ESB. If I do, would you still beta?
