So my twin, my mom, and I were talking during dinner about reading male authors vs female authors, and Twin said that she usually reads male authors because female authors don't write her favorite genre, science fiction--or at least, they don't write science fiction without a fantasy edge, like Ursula Le Guin and Anne McCaffrey and Madeleine L'Engle do.

My mom and I wracked our brains, but we couldn't think of any woman who wrote pure science fiction, without the fantasy elements. And I find it hard to believe that women ignore a genre like this, especially with the age we're in (technology and so on), so...does anyone know of any female sci-fi writers, and if so, could you recommend them to me?

C. J. Cherryh, I believe writes a 'harder' science-fiction (although I think she sometimes writes fantasy, but I'm not sure).

I've only read short stories of hers so far (and it's a damn shame), so I might have to double-check that one.

Julian May. :D

IMO, her best is here Galactic Milieu Trilogy (Jack the Bodiless, Diamond Mask, Magnificat). That's pretty much SF, future-earth and aliens and the like. (and is very good) ...but its companion quartet, Saga of the Exiles seems like it has a fantasy twist, even though it is still technically very much SF. :)

Unfortunately I can't help you, but I just had to interject OMG I love Anne Mccaffrey! She is my favorite author and has been for a long time. Ahhhh. so good. I prefer the sci-fi with the fantasy edge myself. That is an interesting thing you have caught there, and I cant think of any answer, mostly because I just don't read pure sci-fi.

Catherine Asaro was the first name that came to mind for me - also Nancy Kress, because I read one of her books very recently.

I was just about to recommend her! Wonderful stuff indeed. I'd also put in a big plug for Kage Baker and her Company series, and anything by Connie Willis.

Lois McMaster Bujold, I think. I'm pretty sure the Vorkosigan (sp, as I haven't read them in ages) is pretty much pure sci-fi.
