Went to the library today. Just read Shadow of the Hegemon, and still have Xenocide and Children of the Mind. The librarian joked that I was on an Orson Scott Card streak :D.

[livejournal.com profile] ronniekinns said she wants more Regulus fics, so...here's a drabble for you. Might turn it into a real fic when I have more time. Keep in mind that this is also completely unbetaed. So without further ado, here it is.

Title: To Be a Black
Summary: When your brother and your family are on opposite sides, where do you stand?
Rating: G

"Do you know what your brother has done now?" She was calm. Deceptively calm, because Regulus knew that she had to be seething with anger inside. She probably would have let her rage loose already, unless what Sirius had done was too bad for her to yell. But what could he have done, when he'd only been at Hogwarts a day in his first year?

But his mother continued what she was going to say as if she hadn't even asked her younger son a question. "Your brother," she said through gritted teeth, a letter crumpled in her fist, "has gone and got himself sorted into Gryffindor."

For a moment, Regulus stared. Then he blinked, and the impact of the statement hit his brain. He burst into laughter. Sirius? A Gryffindor? But all Blacks were Slytherins, with the exception of a Ravenclaw or two! Someone must be playing a joke.

"Stop that!" his mother snapped. "This is a serious matter! Your brother is in the house of foolhardy filth and Mudbloods!"

Regulus's laughter died in his throat. It was true? Sirius really was a Gryffindor?

"But that can't be right!" Regulus exclaimed without thinking, and his mother frowned at being contradicted. Regulus didn't notice. "He's a Black! Blacks don't get sorted into Gryffindor!"

"Your brother is not as proud of his heritage as he should be," Mrs Black snarled. "He apparently would rather forget that he is a member of the House of Black."

Regulus chewed the inside of his lip. Sirius would get hell from the rest of the family, he knew that. And he knew just as well that Sirius wouldn't care. He probably did fit better in Gryffindor than he would have in Slytherin or Ravenclaw, but...he was a Black!

"You won't do that to me, will you, Regulus?" his mother asked suddenly, nearly a complete turnaround from her original anger. "You wouldn't betray the family the way your brother did, would you?"

And without even thinking about it, Regulus shook his head. He wouldn't betray his family. He lifted his head slightly with pride. He had a long, noble heritage, and he'd stand by it. He'd show Sirius what it meant to be a Black.

Didja like it, [livejournal.com profile] ronniekinns? Not very long, but meh. And I'm not sure if you've read my Blackfics or not...they are at The Most Ancient House of Black (my more recent one, and the one without slash, is "The Repercussions of Having Bad Hygiene" under the Boys' Parents), so you probably have, but just making sure ;).

Am going away for Thanksgiving, and will probably be cut off from the internet until either Friday or Saturday, though most likely Saturday. But don't worry [livejournal.com profile] allisonblair, I'll try not to burn water ;). See you later, everyone! Happy Thanksgiving for the Americans!

Looks like Ronniekins liked. So did I! I love stories about brothers. Poor misdirected Regulus.

I was actually thinking of doing a similar ficlet, from Sirius' POV--his reaction to Reg being sorted into Slytherin. Maybe I'll write it after all. You've inspired me!

thanks

I never had an original interest in Reg after OotP -- probably because my attention was more focused at the time on Remus than Sirius -- but this was fabulous. With every Reg fic I read, I get my into his character.
