So, John Edwards came to Reno and gave a speech yesterday. I had a ticket to go see him, but bugger it, I completely forgot until I went out to dinner and saw my parents watching his speech on TV.
Also, Edwards deserves a gold star for having pronounced "Nevada" correctly. Which Bush couldn't do when he came here to speak. *snicker*
Note to people who are not native Nevadans--it is not pronouned the Spanish way ("Nev-aw-da"), but with a short a, like in bat, for the second syllable. Anyone who pronounces it Nev-aw-da is mocked mercilessly, and that includes the President. (Even if all these conservatives wrote letters to the editor yelling at anyone who mocked him. *sigh*) And you'd be amazed at how many people can't pronounce it correctly, even when I hear it on the radio on local stations. *mind boggles*
ETA: Discussion of the word Nevada reminded me of this one book I shelved at work on Friday. It was a romance novel, which should give you an idea of the plot (or lack thereof), and the woman's name was Nevada. The man's was Jack Roulette, or something like that. *g* We can't escape the gambling...
Anyway. Moving on.
Pronouncing the name of the state correctly is one step closer to winning the state. Or at least I so hope--Nevada is traditionally conservative. But there is the whole Yucca Mountain deal...
Cheney is coming to speak on Thursday. I would go hear him, just to know what he has to say, if it wasn't the sixteenth. However much I want to be informed, I don't want to listen to a member of an administration that I don't like on my birthday (speaking of which, please ignore it. I will otherwise feel extremely guilty about pretending it was in May).
And now back to fandom.
lizardlaugh has decided that Harry needs a hug, and so this is what I wrote in response. Short Trio drabble.
“Go away,” Harry said dully, lying on his bed in Grimmauld Place with his eyes closed.
“No,” Hermione said. Harry looked up to see her putting her hands on her hips. “The last thing you need is us going away and leaving you alone.”
Harry shrugged, as if it did not matter to him. “Whatever,” he muttered.
Ron walked over and sat down next to him on the bed. “Harry, mate,” he said, “it’s obviously not all right, and I’m not sure it ever will be, but you know you’ve got us, don’t you?”
“Right,” Harry said, his voice completely without inflection. Hermione let out a large sigh.
“Right, that’s it,” she said. “Ron, move over a bit.” Ron obligingly moved over, and Hermione sat down beside both of them on the bed.
“Going to make me talk about it?” Harry asked without looking at them.
“No,” Ron replied, after exchanging a glance with Hermione. “You have to talk eventually, but it doesn’t have to be now.”
“Then would you mind leaving?” Harry asked, turning over on his side so that he wasn’t facing his friends.
“Yes,” Hermione said, “we would.”
The next thing Harry felt was two slender arms wrapping around his waist from behind, and he turned over to see Hermione smiling into his face. And then Ron was hugging him from his other side, and Harry twisted his head to see Ron smiling at both of them.
“We’re staying here,” Ron said, and both his and Hermione’s arms tightened around Harry. Harry sighed, but didn’t try to move away, and, eventually, relaxed in their embrace and fell asleep between them.
Feedback is always appreciated. :)
