Nov. 24th, 2008 10:50 pmAll of the papers are turned in. I don't have to think about them anymore, at least until I get them back. XD There are still a few things hanging over my head during Thanksgiving, but nothing really immediate, so I don't have to spend the entire break working.
Today I was sort of questioning my major. This feels very weird to me, since I've known I wanted to be an English major ever since I knew what a major was. Though really it's not the English part, but my emphasis (my school has three emphases for English, and every major chooses one--Literature; Writing, Rhetoric, and Culture; and Creative Writing). I'm Creative Writing, of course, but I'm not really liking what I'm writing in my Intro to Writing Fiction class. My last two stories didn't come out very well, and I'm not sure about this last one I wrote. I feel good about my fic writing, but not the original stuff, and it's the original stuff that I need to develop in preparation for actually hopefully selling something.
I think part of it is the format of the class. It's focused on short stories, which of course makes sense in an intro class for one semester, but I've never been much interested in original short stories, and I don't really like writing them either. I like things with a whole universe, lots of context, even if it's just one book and the universe and context are being established over the course of that single book. I just feel very constrained with writing short stories. And if I told this to my teacher, she'd probably tell me that I should get better at writing them anyway because the lessons I learn here can apply to the novel as well, which makes sense, but when I don't feel like I'm doing very well with the short stories, I just want to try something I like better.
Also, my teacher keeps emphasizing that we have to write "literary" as opposed to genre fiction, but she's not exactly clear on what she means and so I've just been writing straight fiction when what I love to write is fantasy and romance. So that doesn't help.
Ohh, laundry's done. Must go now, then go to bed, as I have to be up early tomorrow. See you when I get home!
