Happy and interesting aren't mutually exclusive. But somehow I have to be in a certain mood for them and I default to ones where it's not going to work.
One of the best examples I can think of is in the Alanna series by Tamora Pierce. I love Alanna/George which is the main pairing by the end of the first quartet. But the p[airing I was really going for was Liam/Alanna and it was never ever going to work as he hates/ is scared of her magic. She would never be able not to use it as she describes it once as her sword arm. She can't not use it as it's part of who it is. But it makes me a little bit heartbroken every time I see them first meeting that it works out somehow without compromising themselves.
