Title: A Slowly Growing Illumination
Author: Rynne
Fandom: Doctor Who
Summary: Reinette has a decision to make. Implied Ten/Rose, set during Girl in the Fireplace.
Rating: G
Notes: Written for the first challenge of the second round of [livejournal.com profile] doctor_rose_las. The prompt was: Write an account of the Doctor/Rose relationship from another character’s point of view.

"Here's to the slow path."

He smiles and clinks his glass with hers, but she can tell the bright tone and cheerful face are only a façade. She is quite adept at reading people -- she has to be, to have survived in court this long -- but she would have been able to tell even without that skill. The Doctor is not meant for the slow path, and Reinette knows it. He will not be happy here with her, even should her king not object.

She does not like it; of course not. She has spent years dreaming of this man, wondering about his place in her life, wishing she could see him for more than mere minutes at a time. She has even seen into his mind, and though much of his life scares her, much of it draws her as well. He draws her.

She cannot forget the utter loneliness in his mind, permeating his being. It had been so cold and desolate that she had wanted nothing so much as to be warm again, and to draw him into warmth as well. But though he'd danced with her, she could tell that giving him warmth was not her task. She had seen his loneliness -- and seen, too, what was keeping it from overwhelming him.

His loneliness was a dark thing, filling so much of his mind that she had hurt to see it. But there had been a light in the darkness, a slowly growing illumination that made the darkness retreat before it. It was not enough, Reinette had thought upon seeing it, to brighten the whole of his mind, but it was enough to give him some measure of peace. And when she had seen what was at the source of that light, she had known she would never be able to keep him longer than a dance.

Reinette cannot help but be jealous of Rose, as she never has been over her Louis's Marie Leszczyńska. Reinette gets minutes of the Doctor's time, and Rose gets hours, days, even years. Time favours Rose so clearly, and Reinette cannot overcome that, not when she knows she has no true hold over the Doctor. Rose and the Doctor have history, with the emotions between them having had time to take root deeply, but the ties between Reinette and the Doctor have not had that time. They're not nearly so strong.

She does not even need to be his lover -- though she would love him still, as she does Louis -- but she would hope to be enough for him to be content to spend a few years with her. Yet she sees him now, trying to hide his resignation, and knows that is but a dream; he is not suited to the slow path, not with her.

Reinette does not want his resignation. She does not want the knowledge that he would leave her given the first opportunity to get back to his life, and she does not want to stifle him, to hold him back with her and make him less than what he is. But his world is too foreign to her, and she cannot give him what he needs.

She thinks of Rose, with a hair colour clearly false, her make up too heavy, her clothing foreign and revealing, and has to remind herself not to judge by appearances. Though Reinette had had a bare few minutes to get Rose's measure, and despite the resentment she had felt that Rose was there instead of the Doctor -- and that Rose had a place in the Doctor's life she could not hope to equal -- she had seen what she'd needed to. Rose is kind, compassionate, and gracious, and she too loves the Doctor. She will take care of him.

And Reinette will do her part as well; there are more important things now than her desire to keep him with her. She will save him now, and he will remember that, and remember her. The life at Versailles is not so very bad, and she still has Louis; she will be happy. The Doctor will go back to his life of travelling amongst the stars, back to his Rose, and he will be happy as well.

That is all she needs, and Reinette makes her decision.

Oh, Reinette is such a clever lens to use for this prompt. Your style is concise but eloquent, something I respect, and it is formal enough to suite Reinette as a narrator. It really is very sweet the way she clearly would like to take the "slow path" with him, but she shows him the fireplace anyway, and your fic does wonders to emphasize that decision as well as to explain it. A wonderful introspection to a very quick scene.

How'd you do in the challenge? (Or is that not somethign you talk about yet? I don't know how these las things work, lol.)

Thank you! I actually adapted my style to make it more formal to suit Reinette, and I'm glad you think I did it well. :)

I got no votes either way, but I'm not surprised, considering some of the competition I was up against! *g*

Clearly, we should take away your internet access more often. <g>

This is very well done.

(And welcome back!)

Though actually, I wrote this a few weeks ago. I just wasn't allowed to post it until results for the challenge were in. :p

Love love love this! This is exactly how I see Reinette, so composed and so ready to love the Doctor but aware that he's not for her. Just fantastic and sweet and sad.
