May. 17th, 2008 03:19 pmThis was a pretty light-hearted episode (which I am glad for, after all the recent heavy-hitters), and I don't have that many thoughts.
I still haven't gotten used to the new title music. XD
The reference to The Unquiet Dead! That made me happy. But wow, this season is really going out of its way to reference the previous seasons. Like also, when Agatha said she'd work with the Doctor, but just for the sake of justice because she didn't approve of his enthusiasm, that reminded me of Queen Victoria and her reaction. And the Doctor had pretty much the same reaction to the giant wasp (er, whatever it was called XD) as he did to the werewolf.
Roger and the footman were pretty cute. I was sad when Roger died, and the footman's reaction. :(
The Doctor and the cyanide! That was a funny sequence (omg, walnuts and anchovies and...whatever else he ingested? Urgh, gross. But the charades!). And that Donna kissed him, just to shock him, and it worked...hee. That was great. But it was a nice reminder that his physiology is different, and I always like those.
I didn't like all the flashbacks, but otherwise, it was a cool set-up, and a cool reason for having the set-up (though sorta unbelievable--the firestone transmitted knowledge of the book his mother was reading as he realized who he was? Er, whatever).
Donna was cool with figuring out the wasp's weaknesses--the magnifying glass and the water--but I was sad when it drowned. Donna was also pretty funny with the jumping to conclusions. :p
I'm not sure the Unicorn was important enough to be part of the title, but I can't think of a better one, so. XD
I really liked Agatha. She was pretty awesome.
I also really liked that Lady Edison fell in love with an alien, and didn't care how different he was. Very reminiscent of someone else. :)
Overall, a good episode.

It took me forever to figure out what it even WAS. The necklace, right? Eh.

Awwww! I loved that little detail. :D

Yay for falling in love with aliens! Hopefully our alien gets a happier ending.

And she's blonde. And the Colonel's manipulation was a bit like Nine's manipluation with the Horsehead Nebula.

That did strike me as well--it reminded me of Rise of the Cybermen, actually, in how that one also ignored possible emotional repercussions from the previous episode. I was wondering if they'd ignore Jenny, and it seems like they have. But at least there's still more of the season left, so I can imagine that the Doctor's just repressing (which is, after all, his standard modus operandi) and we might get more about that later.
they do like to have a few familiar refs to orient people at the start of a new series.
Well, there's been familiar refs all throughout the season so far--definitely an exponential increase from the number of references in S2 and S3. I'm not sure I can explain that away as helping orient people, since they're all over the episodes.

Date: 2008-05-18 09:15 pm (UTC)The amount of past season referencing (especially to S1) is making me think that RTD is trying to make us believe that he really did plan all this from S1. ;)
My hope is that they're doing it just so they can make sure we don't forget Rose, and to show that she's not very far from the Doctor's mind--he's constantly being reminded of her, just as we are. *g*
And the Colonel's manipulation was a bit like Nine's manipluation with the Horsehead Nebula.
Hey, it is! Cool connection. :)
