[ficlet] Unbelievable (Doctor Who, Doctor/Rose, 1/1, G)

This was supposed to be a really quick drabble, just to get the idea out of my head. Then it turned into a ficlet. Oh well. :D

Title: Unbelievable
Fandom: Doctor Who

Pairing: Doctor (Ten)/Rose
Summary: Inconceivable, impossible, unbelievable. Well, maybe not quite...
Notes: Um, S4 casting spoilers, though is there anyone in fandom who doesn't know this yet? I think it would be awesome if the Doctor/Rose reunion went like this, though the actual reunion is far more likely to rip out my heart and feed it to me. Some lines from The Princess Bride and the DW 2005 Children in Need special. Randomly for thunderemerald, because she said I needed to write more Whofic, and then I got this idea. :D


He steps into the TARDIS, his mouth already open to chide Donna and Martha for wandering off and getting separated from him, not mention leaving the door open, but then he stops, and his mouth snaps shut. The impossible is standing right there in front of him, smiling at him, and somehow he is speechless.

"Doctor?" Donna says, standing by the console. He thinks he hears suspicion in her voice, but can't tear his eyes away from the vision of Rose to see the expression on her face. "Someone's been waiting to see you."

"Don't you have anything to say to her?" Martha adds.

He swallows, tries to find his voice, and finally succeeds. "Impossible," he breathes. He takes a step forward, his hand reaching out, before he abruptly aborts the movement. It can't really be her. Martha and Donna can see her, so that rules out hallucination, but...she could still be a hologram, or something else he wouldn't be able to touch. The universe is just that cruel.

But then she speaks, and he wants to cry out at the beautiful familiarity of that voice. "You keep using that word," she teases gently. She takes a few steps forward, and he's better able to see the look in her eyes, the one that's full of hope and fear and joy. "I don't think it means what you think it means."

"That's inconceivable," he corrects, still staring at her, "though I suppose it's that, too."

She laughs a bit, and oh, oh, that laugh, it's hers. He's starting to believe, but if this turns out to be some great cosmic joke on him...he's not sure what he'll do.

"My point still stands," she replies. "The impossible happens an awful lot around us, don't you think?"

"Only when the universe is laughing at me," he says, and blinks. "You can't be here."

She rolls her eyes a bit. "Oh?" she asks, and walks forward until she's standing right in front of him. She starts speaking again, gentle and low. "The very first word you ever said to me. Trapped in that cellar. Surrounded by shop window dummies....oh...such a long time ago. You took my hand..." She takes his hand now, her own human-hot and fitting perfectly into his, just like always, and so, so right. "You said one word...just one word, you said... 'Run'."

She's holding his hand. He's holding hers. They're holding hands, just as they have from the very beginning, and he can finally believe it's really her. His voice small and choked up, he asks, "Rose?"

She smiles at him. "Hello," she says, and a little hitched sob escapes him. Then he's pulling her closer, into his arms where she belongs, and she's squeezing him just as tightly, her face buried in his neck. In the background, he can hear Donna remark, "Suppose it really is her after all," but then he tunes out everything but Rose.

Finally he draws back a bit, though still keeping her in the circle of his arms. Oh, he's definitely not letting her go anytime soon. "You know," he says, grinning at her, "I always was impressed with your memory for detail."

She grins back at him, and it's almost like she was never gone. "We never did manage to go to Barcelona, you know."

He keeps one arm around her waist, but raises the other to cup her cheek. She leans into his touch, and his hearts beat faster. "First thing on the to-do list, then."

"Well," she says, "maybe not the first thing."

"Oh?" he replies, raising an eyebrow. "What's first, then?"

As she lifts herself up and touches her lips to his, he decides he definitely can't argue with her priorities.

Oh, I adored this. I started grinning around two lines in and I've read it four or five times now and I still haven't stopped! A million points for the Princess Bride quote, and recounting run, and - eck. I am beyond in love with this.

Oh this was FANTASTIC!!! I absolutely love Rose recounting their first meeting - very reminiscent of the CIN and TCI episodes! This was wonderful. I dearly hope that the reunion in S4 goes just like this - though from reports from Cardiff from people at the filming show that outcome is highly unlikely! :( Thanks for the lovely story!
