Hey, speaking of earwigs, did'ya ever see the movie Mountains of the Moon when one of the guys gets an earwig in his head and it won't stop making noise so he--ah, never mind. ;)
I used to be a lot more freakish about bugs than I am now. Then I spent a month doing field work in India, and shared a guest house room with a four-inch tarantula and a six-inch beetle. After that one sleepless night, bugs just don't bother me that much anymore. Except for moths. I still hate moths.
You know, when I was reading Man-eaters of Kumaon, with the part about Remus trying to sleep and there's all those bugs...I wondered if that was personal experience talking. :p
(Moths are icky too, but since they just hang out around light and don't try to crawl on me, I don't hate them.)
Definitely personal experience talking--as were many other things in that story, but the bugs most of all.
I don't like moths because they flutter. All over the place. Unpredictably. A perfectly harmless moth on the ceiling could flutter into my hair without any warning! Urrrgh.
