So, I participated in both round of [livejournal.com profile] queerditch_pub today, though I missed half the second one because my parents randomly decided that we were going out for dinner, and where my mom was surprised that I knew what Early Admissions was because she wanted to talk to me about it and college, and so I have decided that I am applying for Early Admissions at Puget Sound, because that is my first choice liek whoa and I don't want to go to any other college half as much as I want to go there.

Anyway. I wrote seven drabbles, though one of them I'm not posting because I want to expand on it and turn it into a real fic (and because I must add sex, because this is a really good one to add sex to). A collective PG, I think. Theme tonight was the five senses.

“You have the whole world at your fingertips,” she said.

“You can make something brilliant of yourself,” she said.

“You can do anything you set your mind to,” she said.

“But only if you apply yourself properly,” she said.

Ron glared. “I know, Hermione,” he said between gritted teeth. “I’m not stupid, and this is the kind of thing my mum constantly parrots at us.”

“Then why don’t you do it?” she asked, reasonably. “It’s not that hard, to do things properly.”

“But much less fun,” Ron replied. “And what good is life if it isn’t fun?”

“You can help people,” Hermione said. “You can learn all you can and help people with the knowledge.”

“I can help people as I am,” Ron said. “I’ve been helping Harry just fine without all this knowledge. And besides, knowledge is what we have you for.” He grinned, and Hermione couldn’t help but smile in return.

“Well…” Hermione started, but Ron put a fingertip on her lips.

“Come on, Hermione,” he grinned, “have some fun.”

He kissed her gently and she could feel his smile.

“Fun’s always good,” she said breathlessly when he drew back, and he laughed.

“The problem with you,” Sirius said, “is that you don’t listen.”

Remus raised an eyebrow. “I? Don’t listen?” Sirius could even hear the raised eyebrow in his voice.

“Yes,” Sirius said, nodding, “you. Don’t listen.”

“Then what am I doing right now?” Remus asked.

“You’re hearing,” Sirius said, “and that’s different from listening. What I’m saying is just going in one ear and out the other, because you’re sitting there reading your book and practically ignoring me.

Startled, Remus looked up, and saw Sirius kneeling right in front of his bed, his cheeks flushed and his eyes frustrated.

“What don’t I listen to, then?” Remus asked quietly, putting his bookmark in the book and shoving it away. Sirius’s eyes lightened a moment, but then he shook his head slightly.

“It’s hard to explain,” he said. “But it’s like, if I say something you don’t like, or don’t know how to deal with, you just pretend I never said it. And I know that I say some careless things sometimes, as well as some things I don’t know that I would be able to deal with if I were you. But it doesn’t mean that I didn’t say them, and,” here he hesitated for a moment, then plunged on, “it hurts, kinda, when you pretend that I didn’t.”

“Oh, Sirius.” Remus reached out and gently pushed a lock of hair behind Sirius’s ear. “You should have said something earlier.”

Sirius grinned lopsidedly. “I’m saying something now, aren’t I?” he said, with a hint of his usual humor. “But seriously, Remus. I make an effort to listen to you more now. I’m trying, even if I don’t always succeed. But I’ve learned something, from every girl who left me because I was a berk. I’m not unteachable, and I do think about things that happen, just usually far after the fact. And I learned that relationships are compromises, and this one I really want to work out.”

“I do too,” Remus said softly, his hand settling in Sirius’s hair. And maybe he was listening, because he somehow knew what Sirius wanted right then, and knew how close he wanted them to be, touching. His nails running gently over Sirius’s scalp so that Sirius shivered and felt like wagging his tail, even if he didn’t have one at the moment. That nonverbal communication, where Remus could listen without hearing, and Sirius could do the same…that was partly why this was so important.

“Right,” Sirius said, closing his eyes and relaxing under Remus’s hand. “We’ll both listen more, and go on from there.”

Remus nodded, and closed his eyes as well. They didn’t need to see each other either, to know anything about the other. Sometimes seeing and even hearing was unnecessary. But this, this hand in Sirius’s hair, and how close they are right now, that only a few inches separate them…touch is always important, and they both knew it and reveled in it and it was one compromise that had been made forever ago and would remain.

*

Harry didn’t like being touched that much.

It was partly a novelty thing, he figured. He wasn’t touched very much at the Dursleys, and when he was, it was usually by Dudley’s fist in his face.

It was hard to get used to the touch of soft fingers trailing gently on his face when previously every touch there had been unwelcome, and far more personal than he would have liked.

But those soft fingers on his face felt so much better than Dudley’s punches. Nails trailing gently down his skin and raising gooseflesh was so much better than Piers holding his arms behind him so he couldn’t run away.

And when Draco whispered, “Touch me,” in just as soft a voice, he couldn’t say no.

*

Remus’s hand encircled his wrist, gently tracing the marks left there. “How did these happen?” he asked quietly, almost neutrally.

“They’re not important,” Sirius said, freeing his wrist. “They’ll never happen again, so what does it matter?”

Remus made a noncommittal noise. “They look very red,” he said. “They must have hurt.”

Sirius shrugged. “Not really,” he said, but he looked away, and Remus knew he would have seen the lie in Sirius’s eyes.

“Sirius—” Remus began, but Sirius’s eyes flashed.

“Drop it, all right?” he said sharply. “I already told you, they’re not important!”

Remus nodded, kissing Sirius on the forehead, and didn’t say anything more. And curled up next to him that night, even with Remus’s warm arms around his naked body, Sirius couldn’t forget the feel of the ropes and the sound of Bellatrix’s laughter, and shuddered.

*

“Hush,” Remus ordered, and Harry did. That was the condition of being allowed to come along on this mission—that Harry did what Remus said.

“All right,” Remus said, so quietly that Harry had to strain to hear him. The Death Eaters below them didn’t appear to realize they were there. “We’ve got to get closer, to hear what they’re saying. Any spell we use can be detected by their wards. What do we do?”

Harry bit back a grin—that was Remus, teaching even when he wasn’t an official teacher anymore. “Just climb down the tree,” Harry whispered. “They’re making enough noise with their chanting that we shouldn’t be noticed, especially if we’re careful. And they always pay more attention to magic than physical stuff—it’s one of their weaknesses, that they think magic solves everything.”

Remus grinned at him, and Harry resisted the urge to beam. He always liked getting praise from Remus, even nonverbal. “I’ll go down first,” he said. “You stay here until I give you the signal, then you follow me.”

With that, he was gone, and Harry didn’t even notice anything beyond that he wasn’t there on the tree branch before he was down on the ground and signaling for Harry to come down too. Harry shimmied down the trunk slightly less elegantly, but the Death Eaters noticed nothing.

After creeping close enough to hear the conversation, and concentrating hard enough for later deposition in Dumbledore’s Pensieve, Harry and Remus crept quietly away again before activating the portkey to Grimmauld Place that Dumbledore had given them before this mission began.

But when Remus started down the hall to his room, and Harry followed him, Remus stopped. “Where are you going, Harry?” he asked without turning around.

“You told me to follow you,” Harry said innocently. “You never said to stop following you.”

Slowly, Remus grinned. And then he laughed. “Do whatever I tell you, do you?” he said between chuckles. He seemed to think it funny.

He stopped laughing when Harry nodded fervently, but that grin didn’t go away.

“Well,” he said. “Do whatever I tell you, huh?”

“That’s what Dumbledore told me to do,” Harry said agreeably. Remus hadn’t stopped him yet…

Remus started walking, and threw a look over his shoulder. “Come with me, then,” he said. Harry went.

Lucius looked at the squid.

The squid look at Lucius.

"Hello," Lucius said conversationally.

He privately thought the squid looked rather fetching.

The squid privately thought that Azkaban must have unhinged this strange blond man.

Lucius waded into the water, closer to the squid.

"Would you like some shrimp gumbo?" he asked. "Squids like shrimp, don't they?"

The squid thought Lucius was insane. No one had ever offered it shrimp gumbo before...

But, that shrimp gumbo did smell good...

The squid let Lucius come futher into the water, and didn't even protest when the strange man started stroking its tentacles.

I love them all, but the last one...! I can't stop giggling!

And ah...Early Admission... That's how I got into the school I'm attending now. I didn't want to go anywhere else.

Lucius and the Squid was funny; the two Sirius and Remus ones were very good, though the rope burns one was a bit scary (not a bad thing); Harry/Draco was very sweet; Ron/Hermione rocked. Nice job! *grins and glomps*

It's good to know I'm not the only one trying to squish in college apps. Well, ok, I know that's true, but I can be self-absorbed sometimes. -_-;;

and where my mom was surprised that I knew what Early Admissions

It never ceases to amaze me how little faith parents have in our extensive knowledge of life. :P I'm fairly sure if you told them half the things you knew, they'd be fairly shocked.

I'm guessing you're talking about University of Puget Sound as opposed to the other two answers that popped up when I did a search? I've actually never heard of it, although it seems like a good school.

I wish I could be like you, knowing exactly where I want to go. Blah. What's your planned major, do you know yet?

Bah, I've wanted to do Queerditch for the past monthish (or at least a few weeks), pretty much since my dad started talking about fixing the internet on my computer (the one with YM, mmm). But the computer is still not fixed, and there has still been no Queerditch for me. ANYWAY. I think the Harry/Draco is my favourite one, actually. Short and cute and very believable, which can be hard to get with that pairing. The R/S with Bellatrix was good, too, if depressing. Ok I like them all, but those two especially.

One thing I caught, though -- you have "realize" with the z in the last one. :P *nitpicks*

Ahahaha. You even mention the word "application" to one of my friends, even if you don't mean college apps, she starts wailing, but she wants to go to Georgetown and doesn't think she can get in.

Hee. My mom started explaining what Early Admissions was and I was like, "I know what it is" and she just started demanding how I knew and seemed entirely perplexed that I would learn about it in school. *roll eyes*

Yes, University of Puget Sound, in Tacoma, WA. I went there to visit a couple weeks ago and absolutely loved it.

Am English major *g*. Emphasis on Creative Writing. I've known this practically forever and there has never really been any other option for me, as there's nothing I like half so much, even if career options are limited.

*laughs* That was me a week ago. I totally sympathized. As for Georgetown, it was a tentative choice of mine, but the entrance requirements are demanding. I would suggest she do early decision since that gives a higher chance of entrance (I think).

Call me ignorant, but my mom and I were discussion college, and neither of us could decide what an English major can be used for. I can definitely see you being a publish author with your creative writing skill, but what hired careers are there with your combination? (Not saying you'll be unsuccessful. You definitely will, but I'm just unsure where such a broad combo can lead a person).

Bother British spelling! My computer automatically corrects it and I've gotten tired of fighting with it. :p

Trying to make H/D believable gives me a headache. o.O Amazing that I could do it in something so short.

Are you up to betaing some smut for me tonight? :D It's one of my queerditch drabbles extended (and nearly 2000 words long o.O).

The career options (or lack thereof) are pretty much my only reservation about my choice of major, but my mom suggested the video game industry with regards to RPGs, and I like that idea. I may not be much help with the technical aspects, but people do need to create the characters and the plot and all that stuff, and it's something I'd like to do. A good video game (RPG, that is) is just like an interactive book, which is one of the reasons I love them so much. Plus, I read in I think Newsweek that the video game industry is the one hiring most people now, though that might change in five/six years when I get out of college, but not that much. If nothing else, I certainly don't want to be an English teacher like my mom! (She majored in English Lit)

Now that you mentioned RPG and video games (which is a lovely idea), couldn't you also write movie scripts?

I'm not sure, but I think I read somewhere once that you can get a pretty hefty price for a great script. Hey, you just might be the person that comes along and transforms Hollywood from trash to something worth paying attention to.

And then, I can point to your name and say "I know her!" :D

Date: 2004-09-06 02:38 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] rynne.livejournal.com
Heh. I suppose that I could write movie scripts, if what was selling was something I'd want to write. I've no hand at all at ordinary fiction, and that's what's most prevalent in the movie industry since it started, and just...I'm not so interested in movies, really. Half the time I have the urge to just go to sleep in one, even when I see it in theaters. Video games are much more interesting :D.

Hee, I'm always up for smut. Sure thing.

Oh, and that reminds me, I have all sorts of things to send back to people and such. Oi.

Then I will finish it and hopefully get it to you soon. :D

Oi, I know how that feels. *grumbles* But I finished the 95/77 page story! It was good.

Yes! It was!

Did you think it was slightly AU, though? Like, I don't want her to change it, but Sirius' relationship with his family, and his mother especially, didn't seem quite canon to me.

Date: 2004-09-06 03:11 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] rynne.livejournal.com
Yeah, and Sirius's reasons for running away felt a bit flimsy in the face of his relationship with his family, but I don't really want her to change it either, as it's the first time I've seen something like that and I kinda liked it. But the whole thing just seemed really realistic, especially Remus and Sirius's relationship, in all the time periods.

From: [identity profile] latentfunction.livejournal.com
Ok good. I felt like I was picking the entire thing apart when I read through it, but I eventually decided that I'm just going to tell her to label it as slightly AU. And yes, I looooved their relationship! Like, they were so almost dysfunctional throughout the entire thing, which was GREAT because relationships in RL aren't all cute and perfect and ficcy. And I'm jealous of the title, too.

(Speaking of which, umm, I have no idea for a title to mine, so if you have any ideas at all? *puppyeyes*)
