Oh, Adric.

I'd heard that Adric was annoying, but I liked him. Admittedly, I haven't seen that many serials with him (this was only the fifth), but I liked him a lot. I knew he was going to die in this one before I watched it, and pretty much how, but it was still very sad. Especially how the Doctor couldn't say anything at the end. Oh, Doctor.

And how Adric started the serial wanting to go home, except not really--he just wanted to be appreciated. You know, even if I didn't know Adric was going to die at the end, I would have figured that something was going to happen, because of the threat to leave and then recanting it. And my heart broke a little for the Doctor when he asked Adric if he still wanted to leave and Adric said no. It's so obvious, even in the old series, that the Doctor hates being left behind (I noticed it with Jo too, but Jo, Susan, Sarah Jane, and now Adric are the only classic companion departures I've seen, so there might be more emotion from him that I don't know about).

I WANT THE DOCTOR TO STOP LOSING PEOPLE. Just...someone needs to stay. Oh, Doctor.

The only Tegan I've seen is Logopolis, Castrovalva, The Visitation, and now Earthshock, but even just based on The Visitation and Earthshock, I can...rather see Five/Tegan. More on his side than hers, though, which is sorta funny. But I don't think I can ship, if only because I also know how Tegan leaves. (This is one reason I appreciate Rose. She'd also been through a lot of crap, knew there would be more in the future, and still wanted to spend her life with him. I hope that hasn't changed, because I want the Doctor to STOP LOSING PEOPLE.)

I really like Nyssa. (And omg, her hair is curlier than mine! This is a real feat, since mine is quite curly. My hair's longer, though, so maybe it's just weight dragging it...I wouldn't say straighter, since my hair is never straight, but wavier, I guess.)

Old School Cybermen look ridiculous. This is the third Cybermen serial I've seen, and I've always noticed how ridiculous they look. Oh, Doctor Who, I am so amused at your special effects. *g*

Also, a bit from the Radio Times RTD interview, with a bit from the mid-series trailer.

"Just wait until you see his [the Doctor's] face when he claps eyes on her again! She was always very special to him, but I don't think he realizes how much until he learns of her return."

*makes grabby hands*

I want this moment! I REALLY want this moment! Of course, I loved that bit in the trailer when he affirms that no matter what, Rose coming back is good, but from the moment I saw that, I just really, really wanted to see him learn that she's returning. I want to see his face, the way he acts. I WANT SOME HAPPINESS, DAMMIT. (And I think we are likely to get it, considering that lovely "yeah" in the trailer!)

*BOUNCES*

Also, like [livejournal.com profile] shinyopals pointed out, if he didn't realize how special she is to him throughout S1, S2, and S3, and only realizes when he sees her again...just wow. I mean, seriously? I'm going to cling to Julie Gardner's statement that he was going to say "I love you" on Bad Wolf Bay, so he knows he loves her. (Well, I always figured he knew even before he regenerated, but that would be proof. And I'm not going to worry about how RTD says that unfinished sentence is going to come up again. Nope!) So if he's been underestimating how strongly he feels about her...eeeeee. This is going to be so epic.

Also, if he separates them again after this, I AM GOING TO BE SO MAD. It's just cruel. The Doctor's had enough shit in his life without being separated again from the woman he loves right after he realizes just how much he loves her. I am trying not to be nervous about the finale, but I don't think I can help it. *sigh*

The Doctor needs some happy! And he needs to stop losing people!

It's too early yet for my brain to actually be working, so all I can say here is, I agree. SO MUCH. He needs to be able to keep her for awhile. A long while.

A very long while! Immortal or Time Lady!Rose would never happen on the show (at least, not if she and the Doctor are going to stay together), but surely an extended life span from the Time Vortex wouldn't be too bad? He just...really needs someone who wants to stay with him, and will.

The really tragic thing about a show like Who, of course, is that the logistics -- nearly-immortal alien & companion actors who don't want to commit for more than a few years -- mean that the Doctor necessarily has to keep losing people. (The only real solution would be to give him a Time Lord companion, but that is less of an in for the audience, and also even when they tried that Romana ended up leaving him for another universe. Poor Doctor. This is becoming a pattern.) Actually I think the companion who was around longest is probably Fitz, and that's probably because he was only in the novels and no one decided to get rid of him for good.

All this said, perhaps the 2009 episodes, however many there are, will be vignettes of the Doctor and Rose traveling about for a while? Maybe not until she dies of old age/danger/what-have-you, but at least until they've had some more quality time and the Doctor's forgiven himself a bit? I think he's too damaged to be really all right whenever she ends up leaving, but it might at least help.

Well yeah, of course the constraints of the show mean he's going to keep losing people. I just think it would help the Doctor a lot to have someone who wants to stay with him, someone who chooses him over everything else she could be doing. Maybe he is too damaged to really be all right when she eventually dies (hopefully old age), but I think it would still give him some measure of peace, knowing that she chose him, she was happy with him, and they were together as long as they could be.

I'm just very tired of him losing people traumatically. I also think that he must constantly feel like he's second-best. I don't blame any of the companions who have chosen, for whatever reason, to leave, but for his sake, I want someone to want to stay with him.

*Continues to bounce*

I am living in such a lovely denial land where there is nothing to worry about. (Won't crashing down to reality be fun?)

But seriously, she can't just casually choose Pete's World after all this, can she? *Clings to hope*

She better not! It would go against her characterization from previous seasons, and it would devastate the Doctor, and he's had enough of being devastated.

*clings as well*

I agree! I love this series, but it's getting depressing, considering how many times the Doctor's had his soul crushed so far. I need some happy moments so I can see a reason why the Doctor should get up in the mornings.

I've been watching Old School Who too! I'm glad that you're liking it so far! Would you mind if I friended you? :3 I'd love to have someone to discuss Old School Who and Doctor/Rose with!

[identity profile] rynne.livejournal.com 2008-06-20 07:04 am (UTC)(link)
This show just really needs some balance. They can't sustain this much angst for that long, not without desensitizing the audience and making all the angst cartoonish. We need some happy!

Old School Who is really rather awesome, in a fond-amusement way. :D And it's always great to meet other D/R fans who like Classic Who as well. Friend away!

[identity profile] blackcat-1.livejournal.com 2008-06-20 07:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd just like to say that I totally agree with you. There are a number of people out there in the D/R community who have put forward ideas for giving them at least some sort of happiness for a time, without preventing the show moving on; it is possible to do it, if RTD wants too!

[identity profile] rynne.livejournal.com 2008-06-21 08:55 am (UTC)(link)
I really hope that RTD does want to. I mean, he seems pretty invested in this relationship that he's created, and he was so respectful of their feelings for each other in Doomsday and throughout S3. Since I think that the most respectful ending for them is together, I really hope that's what he's doing.

*sigh* I guess we'll find out soon!
