Kirk and Spock were an epic friendship first, and while I do believe that there's romantic and sexual love there as well, one of the beautiful parts of the relationship in TOS is that in many ways, it doesn't matter. They're just close to each other, in whatever manner that closeness manifests. With this story I was trying to do the delicate balance of explaining why that closeness would be enough -- and, on the other hand, why it wouldn't be, why they both want more. (Not necessarily need more, but want more.) Anyway, I'm glad the distinction came through.
And I'm especially glad you enjoyed Spock, coming as he did entirely from Jim's point of view!
